Dear "fellow Democrat"....letters from the DNC to me
I gave money to the Democrats last year and was quite clear whenever I called them that I was an alienated Republican supporting the Democrats. Now I've received these nice 'thank you' letters from the DNC where they address me as 'fellow Democrat'. That's fine except, I wonder if it wouldn't be wise of them to start tracking exactly how many Republicans are now contributing to them. Maybe they could start tailoring their thank-you letters to the effect 'we are all in this together'.

Just a PR thought. I wouldn't be surprised if the lock-step GOP machine does track Dems in their database that give money and consequently tailor their responses as part of a 'make-em-feel-special' campaign.

1. Identity politics win elections, not issues or candidates.
So, how can we convince you that you are a 'former Republican' who is now a Democrat?

3. You are correct in your assumption...
The Republican party left me (for the Rapturist Right) and I am much more in-line with the Democratic platform than the Republican platform now. However, I have been able to use my 'as a long time member of the Republican party' speech with other liberal/moderate Republicans in convincing them to vote for good Democratic candidates. It really does work, especially when digging into the fiscal irresponsibility of the current neo-cons, the erosion of privacy using BIGGER government, our unilateral foreign policy and the wholesale alienation of our long time allies...we've even pissed off Canada...this tends to get to the liberal/moderate Republicans.

2. That is a good suggestion for the DNC
I canvassed door to door for three years on universal healthcare and we used to call it "cutting the issue," that is, making the issue relevant to the persons concerns we were speaking with at the door.

It's a little more difficult to do via the net, but it's probably worth the effort.

5. They must have a database of donors....
All they have to do either via a phone donation or via the web is ask party affiliation: 'Democrat', 'Republican', 'Green', 'Independent', etc. etc.

Then they could have some thank-you letters tailored to each group making each feel special (yuk! I do hate that term, but you know what I mean) and yet closing with a 'we are all in this together for the betterment of our country' line.

10. I went to to the Democrat.org web site
and explained the idea and cut and pasted your suggestion. I hope they get the message because it's the little things....

4. The DNC is notoriously bad about this.
I have tried to get them to tailor their correspondence to me to no avail. They send everyone the same stuff.

I used to joke that they spent my monthly contribution in postage to me...I get at least 30 mailings from affiliated groups every month, most of which I'm totally uninterested in.

It's one thing to share info, but the lack of care in distribution is unforgivable.

7. Maybe Dr Dean will see the value in doing this kind of thing.
I know that the Republicans paid big bucks for data mining to identify potential supporters using what people buy at the grocery stores as a guide. They then wrote letters to potential voters and tailored their letters.

Plus, wouldn't the DNC WANT to track other contributors from the Republicans, Greens, Independents, etc. to see how they are impacting the competitors constituents?

6. Howdy --
You make a very good point -- especially in view of Howard Dean's focus on reaching out the red states.

Was just wondering if you've submitted your comment on the feedback form at the DNC website?

8. Yes, I did that on Day 1 of Dr Dean's Chairmanship....
Wanted to let them know that there are many alienated Republicans out there (See Christie Todd Whitman's new book "It's my party too", in case you haven't seen the potential here).

Also wrote that I was NOT looking for the Democrats to move to the right, as would be a logical assumption of a Republican writing on the Democrats.org website. Instead, I think if they move any further to the right, they'll be MORE Republican than I am...seriously.

Anyway, my email to the DNC asked if there will be any grassroots efforts to specifically target us as a group, and how could I get involved, if they want to explore this area. No return reply yet but I'm sure they got lots of email with Dean taking the chair this weekend.
