http://politicspa.com/temp/clay_f.htm

FOR RELEASE: FEBRUARY 16, 2005

CASEY LEADS SANTORUM IN PENNSYLVANIA SENATE RACE,

QUINNIPIAC UNIVERSITY POLL FINDS;

BUSH GETS NEGATIVE APPROVAL RATING

Incumbent Republican U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum trails State Treasurer Robert Casey, Jr., a possible Democratic challenger, 46 – 41 percent, in an early look at the 2006 Senate race, according to a Quinnipiac poll released today. Another 11 percent are undecided.

Sen. Santorum has a 52 – 31 percent approval rating and voters say by almost the same margin that he “deserves to be reelected,” the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN uh-pe-ack) University poll finds.

Santorum would top other possible Democratic challengers:

5. Because of 1 issue.
He is quite progressive on a number of issues. he stinks on abortion, but isn't an activist about it, at least.

6. This is wonderful news. I like Casey. If he doesn't support
abortion rights, that's fine with me. (That's a very personal decision either way you feel about it.)

At any ratee, he will be a far superior choice over that arrogant, sanctimonious jerk, Santorum.

7. How did Santorum ever win in such a blue state anyway?

9. 1. PA isn't SUCH a blue state. Kerry barely won, and the part they call

Pennsyltucky...

2. If I recall correctly, Santorum first ran against another anti-abortion Dem, and the pro-choice groups in the state, not realizing that any Democrat, even a pro-life Dem, would be better than Man-on-Dog, did not contribute to Slick Santorum's opponent, thus denying him a large voting block. (NOTE: I'm not sure about this. I think I read it on DU, but I can't remember where or when. Perhaps a native PAer can clear it up.)

10. His first race was actually against Wofford
who had beaten Thornberg in 1992 but had to run again in 1994. Santorum won in the GOP tide of that year. In 2000, is when the pro choice groups had their snit. Sadly some gay rights groups joined them in the snit. They both should have known better.

13. Thanks, didn't know that
I think they have become more blue since then, but were more purple back then. I'm still surprised he won in a northern state, especially one with 2 large cities.

11. This is fantastic news even if it's early to be polling...
for '06. I hope this will help Casey make up his mind to get in the race. I know he is being coaxed to get in by the national party, but apparently has not decided yet.

12. Casey can beat Santorum hands down, he's well liked here
and people are fed up with Santorum embarrassing this state with his
sick comments. People will work and contribute money to get this joker out of office. Casey can do it, he'll pull Republican votes and Democratics will vote for him just to get rid of Santorum, even though we don't agree on his pro-life stance, he doesn't push this
issue.
