Take Back the Media: Jon Stewart joins the VLWC
The dominance of the RWCM (Right-Wing Corporate Media) is one of the biggest threats to democracy today. There's been a lot of talk about the need to break the corporate stranglehold on media outlets, and now allies are emerging with the resources to really make it happen.

Could it be, finally, our very own Vast Left-Wing Conspiracy?

The corporate shills on the right have spread rumours about the so-called liberal media for so long, and so much of the population believes it, that it's just comical. It's time to give up on debunking that tired old chestnut, and turn the mythical Liberal Media into reality.

First it was Soros and Buffett buying up stock in the cable companies (http://forum.truthout.org/blog/story/2005/2/15/102525/242). Now, it Jon Stewart getting funding to run his own production company!

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2005/2/16/155052/804

I've always wanted a VLWC. It'll be very entertaining to see how this develops.

4. I never thought of Jon as left-wing
He always struck me as an independent for going after sacred cows on both sides of the aisle and being a big McCain fan.

He made fun of Kerry a lot during the campaign, spoofed the Convention in Boston mercilessly, and his interview with Howard Dean probably did more damage than any of Gephardt or Kerry's attacks.

That said, I love the guy and want to see more of him.

7. I thought his interview w/
Howard was funny. Howard seemed 2 B enjoy goofing around. Jon lampooned kerry 4 good reason. He always poked fun @ his laborious speech. When Kerry was rambling on & on & on about the Palestinian election Jon, shaking his head, said... 'He's going 2 lose the Palestinian vote too.' Kerry's appearance on TDS was weak.

16. I thought that was a lil funny
I even chuckled at that. I didn't see his interview with Mr. Dean (didn't find out about the show until later on). Anybody have a link that has the video on their site? I'd love to watch. I like how Mr. Stewart is to his guest's. :) No matter who they are he is always nice and friendly and of course commical to them. I remember he had a few republicans on his show (I remember a guy who was in charge of the Bush/Cheney southeast campaign was on and McCain). I know a few others were but that's all I remember particularly.

10. Yeah, but his attacks on Kerry
were of the "why isn't he speaking out more?" or "why isn't he fighting harder?" variety. He never went after Kerry for being liberal. I think Stewart is sort of an outsider-center left kinda guy. His philosophy about the Democrats can be summed up with the line he used about them a couple weeks ago when they spoke out against Condoleeza Rice: "The Democrats new slogan: A moment of courage, a lifetime of capitulation."

5. this will translate into 2 pilots and a show that gets cancelled in 6 eps
Edited on Wed Feb-16-05 05:03 PM by thebigidea
much as I adore the Daily Show, its a bit of stretch to think that a development deal at CC is the start of some anti-Fox...

9. er? what does that even mean?
how does a development deal for comedy projects at comedy central translate into joining the dems instead of the pubs?

I mean, obviously it'll be great to see what Stewart tries next... but how is this a move towards the left?

(I suspect that as always happens whenever an artist tries something different, he'll gets smacked down for not being the same - critics will whine "its no daily show!")

13. Not a move to the left - an expansion
Stewart's not going to change his politics - which I agree seem to be a very pragmatic outside center-left. He's been merciless in hammering the right wing idiots and liars, with some occasional teasing of left wing characters thrown in.

What this deal does is give him room for expansion, and a bigger platform to use to make himself heard. Which can only be a good thing, for those of us who like what he has to say.

It's probably just an idle fantasy that Stewart and Soros would get together and take over the world of corporate media. But it's fun to speculate.

18. Sometimes I think
Edited on Wed Feb-16-05 07:00 PM by FreedomAngel82
that Mr. Stewart just does some democrat people because they do silly things and it's always fun to poke fun at yourself and also so he doesn't lose any audience members. A "fair is fair" type of thing. There was an article not long before the election where he endorsed John Kerry. I'm sure if you google it you can find it.

17. The Daily show does get a lot of viewers though
Hasn't his ratings been going up lately? I remember reading about that.
It would be nice to have an anti-Fox type of network for all of us who aren't republicans to have somewhere to go on the cable news. All the others have been bought. Sad.

I'm glad to hear somebody is doing this. Everytime a pro-Bush republican spews out the "liberal media" I wanna just knock some sense into their tiny little brains instead of stating there is none, but of course it wouldn't do any good. I thought Al Gore was doing a company too??
