Who are the reasonable Republican Senators?
Edited on Wed Feb-16-05 06:56 PM by pstans
*edited to change "good" to "reasonable"

It might be an oxymoron, but who are the reasonable Republican Senators?

I believe that a lot of Republicans are moderates and, if persuaded, can vote their true beliefs and against the radical right wing agenda that has taken hold of the government. Santorum, Coburn, DeMint are as red as the devil and are definitly not good Republicans. But who are the good ones?

4. If they vote for the GOP leadership, they're part of the problem.
It doesn't matter how otherwise "moderate" they might be.

13. Lincoln never served in the Senate
He served one term in the House, but he belonged to the Whig party back then.

8. Good might be a little strong
but Dick Lugar is not a nutcase and seems to work well with Biden and other Dems in trying to get things done. He has always struck me as a fairly reasonable and decent guy. But he's still a Republican, so how decent can he really be?

9. I'd say, among others, McCain and Graham.
McCain is indeed loyal to his party - which to me is forgiveable - but he is probably one of the least partisan politicians I can think of and were he President he would be doing a far better job than Bush. Lindsay Graham is a conservative from South Carolina, but he's a thinking conservative with an independent streak who also is less of a partisan shill than many in the Republican caucus.

There are also a number of New England Republicans - Snowe, Chafee, Gregg, etc., and I think most of them are fairly liberal for their party. (Hopefully they will go the way of Hollings, Bob Graham, and John Breaux and make way for Democrats.)

12. A good Republican senator is one who will not vote in mindless lockstep
for a bad law or a bad nomination. Can't think of one, but two or three might be out there somewhere.

15. McCain, Hagel, Warner, Specter, Snowe seem to have some scruples
Also, Chafee, Graham and maybe Cornyn

Cornyn was the subject of an earlier post re new FOIA legislation:
