Drill instructor caught on tape striking 19-year-old

By Jim Miklaszewski

NBC News

An autopsy revealed 19-year-old Jason Tharp drowned last week during water survival training at the Marine Corps boot camp at Parris Island, S.C.

Video shot on Feb. 7, the day before Tharp's death, by NBC affiliate WIS-TV in Columbia, S.C., shows Tharp, visibly shaken and almost terrified, taking a forearm shot from a Marine drill instructor.

In the Marines only five weeks, Tharp had written seven letters home telling his family he wanted out. His father, John Tharp, claims Jason had been singled out by drill instructors because he couldn't keep up with the rigorous basic training.

1. "No evidence of misconduct"
EXCEPT that there had to be other people present while this kid was drowning, and they stood by and LET him drown. That is beyond shameful.

was really upset and from what I think he said is that he was going to file a wrongful death suit.....in the video.one could see the boy being struck by the "big boy" and was quite shaken even before the blow...he was scared to death of this man.........that much can be seen.......makes you wonder what really happen in that pool the next day...........

3. BS!Parent should insist on an investigation through his congressman

Because of the "Ribbon Creek" drownings and other drill instructor abuse of recruits, they started sending these guys to Levonworth for this.

The Marine corps started hammering hard on them for this. I asked why this guy would act this way now if he knew Levonworth was where he would end up. answer was maybe he just got back from Iraq and doesn't care anymore. Checkout the Beaufort newspaper or Charleston paper , there might be news there on this.

My big fear is that Bush co has dropped the rules the Marines followed about this stuff.

Marine recruit dies in water exercise
Parris Island sustains second training fatality since mid-November

BY MICHAEL KERR, The Beaufort Gazette
Published Wednesday, February 9th, 2005

BEAUFORT -- A Parris Island recruit died Tuesday afternoon during water survival training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot pool.

Details of the incident weren't available Tuesday evening. Maj. Ken White, the depot's public affairs officer said he hadn't received the full report on the incident.
"It's just too preliminary for me to be able to characterize what happened specifically," White said.

White said it shouldn't be inferred that the recruit drowned.

"That would not be an accurate description," he said. "We just don't know."

10. DISGUSTING, Needless, and heartbreaking
a draft is certainly in the near future once recruit numbers topple once this story is more well known.

My heart goes out to that young mans family.

11. once you become "special" in boot camp- youre fucked.
boot camp- in ANY branch- is brutal. The sleep deprivation alone makes it hard core.

This helps the brain washing- which is necessary- but in every push the company commanders single out someone who is slow, or having a hard time, and make an example out of them and in the super stress atmosphere of boot camp, the other recruits in the company pile on with "peer pressure" to buck up.

If you want to see just how ugly humanity can get in eight weeks, join the military.
