GOPUSA is not a two bit fly-by-night organisation. |
here is a little info derived from one simple search.
A fellow DUER asked about the connection between GOPUSA and the Southeastern Legal Foundation. And we were off...... This is the first link and a very good jump-off point which has not been fully explored. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=gopusa+%22Southeastern+Legal+Foundation%22+ Going through some of these links is dredging up a lot of dirt. National Defense is read by: Members and key staff of the House and Senate General/Flag officers in military services Government & military acquisition/procurement workforce Department of Defense personnel Corporate executives Industry prime contractors & subcontractors Military and industry project managers Personnel in the research and development community Professional consulting and service firms And more... http://nationaldefense.ndia.org/advertising/readership.htm Rep. Trent Franks, R-Ariz., succeeded former committee chairman Bob Stump. Franks said he plans to support the F-16 program at Luke Air Force Base, in his district. As the FOUNDING DIRECTOR of the organization AMERICANS FOR MILITARY READINESS, Franks said, “we must recognize that our modern enemy is different, and there’s no question the United States must modernize to further commensurate with the new challenges of this enemy.” http://nationaldefense.ndia.org/issues/2003/Mar/Base_Closures.htmL Rick Erickson has been DIRECTOR of Americans for Military Readiness SINCE ITS INCOPORATION IN 1998. How Do We Know That Our Troops Are Truly Ready for War? By Rick Erickson March 17, 2003 As Director of Americans for Military Readiness, I am frequently asked to define "military readiness" and to otherwise reference a checklist from which we can all be sure that, before they go, our troops are truly prepared to fight the wars we wage. As of late, there is a media frenzy about how our servicepeople can possibly be ready to protect the Homeland from terrorists, conduct a full-scale invasion of Iraq and defend allies like South Korea all at the same time. http://www.gopusa.com/commentary/rerickson/2003/re_0317.shtml RightMarch.com is led by long-time conservative activists William Greene and Phil Sheldon; they've combined their years of expertise in online and offline political activism and fundraising to birth the most dynamic conservative grassroots movement ever seen online. http://www.rightmarch.com/about.htm GOPUSA and RightMarch.com are proud to announce the 2nd annual Issues and Action Conference! More on Arizona/GOPUSA: http://www.gopusa.com/arizona/ An effort is already underway to attempt to find a conservative to run for the House seat in District 8 that will open up after the current legislative session ends later this spring. GOPUSA/Arizona is running a poll this week on the Congressional District 8 race in southern Arizona. Graf has formed an exploratory committee to determine whether or not to challenge the longtime incumbent Kolbe. Graf, from Green Valley, is a conservative and a state representative in District 30. Kolbe is a Log Cabin Republican and liberal who supports abortion, homosexual rights, a guest worker program and who opposes the Federal Marriage Amendment. http://www.azconservative.org/switches.htm Arizona Republicans Unhappy with GOP's Platform Plank on Guest Worker Programs Most Arizona Republicans think the new GOP platform does a good job in addressing social issues, but it falls far short in the area of illegal immigration, according to a GOPUSA/Arizona poll. Seventy-one percent of respondents to the poll said the 2004 Republican platform is "good on social issues, but the amnesty plank is unacceptable." Just 2 percent expressed the sentiment that the platform is "fine." Another 25 percent said that "incrementally, the platform and the party are shifting left." And 1.9 percent said they had either not yet read it or were undecided. Exactly 700 persons participated in the recent week-long survey at www.gopusa.com/arizona. http://64.233.161.104/search?q=cache:_5ScdfSHydgJ:www.azconservative.org/State%2520News%2520Briefs.htm++site:www.azconservative.org+++%22rick+erickson%22++gopusa+&hl=en 90 Percent Say AFRW's Greener Should Go In a recent GOPUSA/Arizona survey, 90 percent of respondents said that Dot Greener should either resign or be removed as president of the Arizona Federation of Republican Women. As reported last week by The Arizona Conservative, Greener broke federation by-laws by working for the election of a Democrat. Greener collected nominating petition signatures for Patricia Gerrodette, a Democrat running for the city council in Sierra Vista. The National Federation of Republican Women has not responded publicly to the Greener scandal. GOPUSA is actually almost a national organisation. 1. A lot of that is fluff... but not excessively so... |
... but the salient point is: it's not a news site.
Its primary task is GOP propaganda. As for the money, I'm not sure there's so much involved. Most of this is linked stuff from GOP/conservative groups happy for more exposure. The conference they say they are sponsoring seems to be mostly an event paid for by rightmarch.com, which is mostly funded by small contributions--they have a PAC and there are only ten contributors in the last election cycle giving more than $200. One only for $2000, according to opensecrets.org, and the entire fund listed only $60K worth of contributions. For the website, if there's a big moneyman behind them, it's strictly cash and no records. Eberle isn't paying reprint fees for very much of this, and most of his staff is volunteer. His biggest costs are server maintenance and bandwidth, I would suspect. He might be able to afford those, but if the money's coming from elsewhere, it's not extraordinary, or it's strictly cash. The right sticks together, as long as the message doesn't vary. Their modus operandi is getting their message out, by any means possible. GOPUSA is yet another means of doing that. But, from what I can find, GOPUSA and Talon News are punk-ass operations. Sort of in character with the qualifications of their "employees." Jeff Gannon wasn't making his money as a newsman. Cheers. |

5. Jeff Gannon lived in Washington DC |
Edited on Sat Feb-19-05 03:04 PM by DulceDecorum
and attended at least two parties at the White House.
He walked the walk and in order to do so he MUST have had money. So far, we have seen nothing to suggest that the man was independently wealthy and we again have no reason to suppose that his escort service brought in more than just mad-money. Someone was supporting Jeff Gannon financially and the question is WHO? Now, one would assume that Talon News was paying his way and that is a logical and reasonable assumption. But where did Talon News (and the GOPUSA Eagle before that) get the money for Jeff's weekly paycheck? From Bobby Eberle's GOPUSA? OK, then. Where does GOPUSA get ITS money? Tell me that because Bobby Eberle certainly won't. GOPUSA is one cog in a big machine and we need to have a good look at what this one little cog turns and who is turned on. http://www.mediatransparency.org/recipients/self.htm |

7. As I recall... |
Edited on Sat Feb-19-05 04:29 PM by punpirate
... he was selling his escort services for something like $200/hr, or $1400/weekend.
Even living outside DC, that might pay some bills. It's not as if there are no potential clients for people like him in the DC area, and certainly not that no one's got that kind of money to spend there. But, I agree, in this regard. If he's a volunteer, how did he support himself? If he's a volunteer, did GOPUSA/Talon News pay his expenses? If so, who signed the checks, and for what amounts? If he was on salary, the above applies. Who signed the checks? What banks were they drawn on? No one, to my knowledge, has asked these questions of him. I would say, with reasonable certainty, that he wasn't making big money on journalism--not with the size of the outstanding state tax bill he has. Unfortunately, those are the kinds of questions that won't get answered on Google. Prosecutors might be able to find that information, but as far as ordinary folks digging it out, privacy laws prevent the dissemination of that sort of info. And, unless GOPUSA.com is a non-profit (which, by law, it could not be, because of its activities), there would be no Form 990 to search. Even then, only contributions over $50,000 need be listed, and that's an easy requirement to get around. But, I wouldn't categorically say that Gannon could not be kept on a part-pay retainer paid out of small contributions to GOPUSA.com. Here's something you can look at, though. AmericaBlog.com said his company is called Bedrock Corp. Maybe someone in Delaware can see if he's paid his annual incorporation fees to Delaware for that corp. (kinda think Delaware doesn't have that info online). Also, what might be interesting would be to see if Delaware has "DBA" records available, to see if Bedrock or Guckert or Gannon is an owner of any other companies hidden under different names, and if they're in good standing, or have co-owners, or boards of directors. On edit, I wonder just how fixed the guy is. We know he's not a real journalist, because he has no real background in it. Others have found that he's listed on one referral site as a court reporter, and yet, he seems to have no listing in his bio for training in that, either (I've known people taking court reporter courses--the course is intensive, months long and demanding). Which also makes me wonder--don't court reporters have to be sworn as officers of the court, or at least have a notary's license? I just found that he's on another referral site as someone doing receivables factoring: http://www.accounts-receivable-invoice-factoring.com/DE/Delaware-Business-Factoring.htm That's basically buying someone's business receivables at a discount, collecting later and taking the difference. Lots of people try to pick up a little cash doing that, but I don't think it's a money-maker unless it's done full-time. Ah, well, maybe more later. Cheers. |

2. Good work - that's what this story is about - the RW propaganda machine |
There is a huge machine at work, as described in David Brock's book.
Frank Rich has a piece in the NYT that makes the critical connection between Gannon and the Bush administration other calculated propaganda efforts. I posted about this yesterday: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=1602600&mesg_id=1602600I The "sex angle" of the Gannon story is great -- because it's what's gotten the story so mcuh attention -- but it's the propaganda angle that's so critically important (and why I titled my post, "It's all about the PROPAGANDA, STUPID!!" Im my opinion, the kind of research you are doing is terrific: It exposes the huge web of interlocking, interconnecting relationships between all these right-wing Republican think tanks, advocacy groups, and "media outlets". |

Do you operate your own data center or do you lease servers from another provider? A.Our servers are leased from Alabanza, Inc., a highly respected leader in providing hosting solutions for hosting companies. You'd be surprised at how many top-quality hosts use the services of Alabanza. Q. Why should I use your services rather than from a company that operates its own servers on-site? A. We can provide you with the very best server reliability and speed for a great price, while focusing on customer support. Through "economies of scale", Alabanza is able to provide us with the very best Internet connection, reliability, speed, Control Panel automation, monitoring, security, etc. for a price that we could not even come close to if we did it ourselves. This efficiency is passed on to you in our pricing structure. Sure, we could invest in hardware, obtain a T1 connection, and maintain our own servers, but the whole package would not be near the quality, reliability, speed, etc. as provided by Alabanza, and it would probably cost us more at the same time. Alabanza's quality, speed, and reliability have a great reputation and we are proud to offer it to you. For a very impressive description of how our servers are maintained at Alabanza, click here. In addition, take a look at the constant server monitoring actions taken at the Alabanza Data Center. We think you'll agree that you'd be hard-pressed to find a better server solution than this, and next to impossible for us (or anyone) to offer this same level of quality, reliability, connection speed, and Control Panel automation on our own for the same affordable prices. http://redhothosting.com/faq.shtml The link http://woodinteractive.com/ leads us to this: Republican Resources is an exciting new idea in conservative politics. 4. Alabanza. |
Thomas V. Cunningham, Founder, Chairman and CEO
Mr. Cunningham founded Alabanza in 1995 and serves as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board. http://www.alabanza.com/6.1Team.shtml Thomas V. Cunningham, Founder, Chairman and CEO Mr. Cunningham founded BulkRegister and serves as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board. Mr. Cunningham earned his Master's degree in Instructional Systems Development from the University of Maryland and possesses extensive experience in digital multimedia and web hosting technologies. He started BulkRegister in 1999 with the strong conviction that domain name Registrars and reseller channels would enable a global revolution in e-commerce, communications and business management. Mr. Cunningham was named Ernst & Young's 2002 Regional Entrepreneur of the Year and is also founder and Chairman of Alabanza. http://www2.bulkregister.com/team.php Outage in Baltimore An apparent generator malfunction at a Baltimore building that houses Alabanza and Bulkregister.com left hundreds of thousands of web sites unreachable for much of Wednesday night. An overheating generator in the basement of 10 E. Baltimore created a smoke condition that forced the shutdown of the building's electrical systems. Alabanza's chief executive officer, Thomas V. Cunningham, told the Baltimore Sun that all of its client Web sites - about 200,000 across the United States - were affected. A support forum message from ChristianWebHost, one of Alabanza's largest clients, placed the total length of the outage at 11 hours. Alabanza provides turnkey hosting programs that automate essential functions for its reseller clients. Its hosted software allows resellers to sign up web hosting customers without the intervention of customer support employees or a billing department. Its sister company, BulkRegister, is the third-largest registrar of Internet domain names. The outage creates a headache for Alabanza, which like most hosts has touted its reliability. "Alabanza recognizes that downtime is not an option for your servers," the company says on its web site. "That's why we invest heavily in hardware and facilities that ensure that your clients are up and running on the web 24 hours a day, seven days a week." http://www.carrierhotels.com/wiredspace/archives/2003_09.html September 18, 2003 (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Web hosting automation firm Alabanza (alabanza.com) was affected by a generator malfunction in the building that houses its offices and data center last night, leading to two hours of downtime. <snip> Alabanza expanded its operations at 10 E. Baltimore St. in a ceremony at the building earlier this year. The company also operates BulkRegister.com (bulkregister.com), a leading domain name registration firm. http://www.thewhir.com/marketwatch/ala091803.cfm September 23, 2004 It may not have helped the company that a similar incident had similar effects one year ago, when fire was again the culprit in what amounted to downtime and lost dollars for many of Alabanza's hosts. Some posters resented a second outage with similar circumstances, arguing it was something Alabanza said it was planning to avoid. http://thewhir.com/features/alabanza-blackout.cfm And for those of you who were wondering at the speed with which GOPUSA altered its WHOIS data: The one-step TransferXpress process requires BulkRegister members to enter the domains they wish to transfer, and the existing registrar name. Confirmation emails still have to be approved as required by ICANN, but the process has been greatly simplified. Transfer Agents now carefully monitor each transfer, says the company, whereas in the past, status emails were sent at various steps throughout the transfer process and often caused confusion. http://thewhir.com/marketwatch/bul092804.cfm |

8. GKG.Net: a Minority/Woman-Owned Business in Texas |
February 18, 2005
It was also revealed that Jeffgannon.com had been registered by the same Delaware-based company that had registered other Republican-oriented web sites, along with those catering to pornographic military gay themes and male escort services. TalonNews.com and GOPUSA.com are both registered to Endeavor Media Group LLC, operating from Post Office Box 891354 in Houston, Texas. The phone number provided is 999-999-9999. The registrant for a series of web sites, including Jeffgannon.com, Theconservativeguy.com, Exposejessejackson.com, Militaryescorts.com, militaryescortsm4m.com, and hotmilitarystud.com is Bedrock Corporation of 4001 Kennett Pike in Wilmington, Delaware. Bedrock is owned by Jim Guckert, the apparent real identity of Jeff Gannon. The administrative contact for Bedrock was listed as "J. Daniels," possibly another alias. After the Gannon story broke, militaryescorts.com and hotmilitarystud.com were redirected to a secure log-in site at Cupertino, California-based www.dividezero.net/, which was registered to GKG.Net, which had a contact email in College Station, Texas, the home of Texas A&M University and the George H.W. Bush presidential library. Dividezero.net had a secure log-in window but no subscription information. Experts who track illegal content on the web, including child pornography, report that such sites are common where log-in information is provided separately by regular mail so that the identities of subscribers cannot be easily tracked by online enrollment and entry of credit card information. http://onlinejournal.com/Media/021805Madsen/021805madse... Soon after graduating, the twosome partnered with Texas A&M to establish a NAFTA Web site in Mexico. According to Paul Marvin, now the company's chief operating offices, its ties to Latin America remain strong. "Our company started down in Latin America—the US is our second home," he said. "We don't have an office down there, but that is where we started from." By the time the company was ICANN-accredited in May 1999, it had already established a Web development, Web hosting and colocation business with resellers worldwide—and they've kept on growing. "We're dealing with over 160 countries right now," Marvin said. In late 1994, Paul Marvin Jr. and W. Taylor Marvin entered the Internet business as Global Knowledge Group (GKG). Their management, engineering, and technical backgrounds demanded that they take immediate advantage of the burgeoning Internet commerce of the World Wide Web. 9. GOPUSA Publishing Guidelines for Opinion Writers |
Edited on Mon Feb-21-05 12:45 AM by DulceDecorum
Here are some items to consider when submitting columns:
Columns should be timely. Columns should preferably be no more than 800-850 words, although longer columns may be considered. Columns should be well researched, and sources should be available should facts be challenged. All columns must be the original work of the author making the submission. <snip> GOPUSA prefers to receive columns as attachments in Word format but plain text files will also be accepted. Please include your name, address, phone number and a color photo with your first submission. GOPUSA will only publish the author's name and photo with the column, but the other information is required for record-keeping purposes. GOPUSA will not publish columns under pseudonyms. http://www.gopusa.com/commentary/guidelines.shtml |
