GOP dirty tricksters trying to sabotage AMERICAblog
by John in DC - 2/19/2005 02:38:00 PM

Well, isn't this interesting. Defenders of Gannon are now phoning people who post comments on AMERICAblog, they pretend to be me, and ask the person to stop posting on the forum. This happened to a good friend of mine who posts here (guys, get a clue, don't call a friend of mine and pretend to be me), and now it's happened to someone else.

First off, when you use a phone, there's an electronic paper trail. Second of all, when you pretend to be someone else, you're very likely bordering on a crime. If this story is so hot that Gannon's, and/or the White House's defenders, are feeling the need to try to sabotage this blog, well all I can say is thanks, and I'm posting this publicly so perhaps we can get another media story out of this.

In the meantime, folks, maybe you shouldn't post your full name to your comments, and be assured I'd never phone any of you.

One more point, this is pure Karl Rove. His MO is to contact people during a campaign and pretend he's representing the other candidate, then do something obnoxious. Good to know we're getting to them, and if any reporter wants the story, give me a holler.

1. The great thing about Blogs
is that you can really stuff a lot of Rove's dirty tricks because communication is so open.

28. Just be sure to DOCUMENT EVERYTHING!!!
Document the date and time of the call, do a *69 or contact the phone company to assist you in obtaining the phone number, record or write down the substance of the conversation.

The Rove machine must be taken down!!!

22. Jeez!
I just visited the bored link on your posting. Unreal. Where does all of this end? This is so sad. I find myself repeating the same woe's over and over again...

"What happened to my country in just 4 years?"
"Where did all of these nutwings come from?"

Oh, I'd be here all night. It's just un-fricked real. Sad. Very, sad.

6. Your friend that got the call should have had a little fun with it.
I would have told the caller that the "Guckert Tapes" are in locker thirteen at the bus station and then tell him my phone was going dead and hang up before I could tell in what city.

It redials the number of whoever called last.

Interesting irony in that number choice for this particular job.

& can provide John with the caller's phone number.

Good to know we're getting to them, and if any reporter wants the story, give me a holler.

John needs to get pro-active with this & contact the media with his documentation, instead of asking them to contact him.

12. TV=OFF WEB=ON ELECTION FRAUD COMPLAINT FORM=FILLED OUT
If you voted on a system

That uses electronics, digitized data, or insecure networks

YOUR RIGHT TO VOTE WAS DENIED.

Because your vote (when it became digital data) disappeared at the speed of light literally.

No human can see it. No human can audit it.

You will never know if it counted or not.

Now you need to fill out an election / fraud complaint form.

30. If they're going after the bloggers, it's the same modus operendi they've
used successfully against the "mainstream media." And THEY are all scared and cowed and a herd of good little doggies as a result of it. But the problem is

A) bloggers, if they're any good, are already onto this. They know MANY examples of kkkarl rove or rove-inspired intimidation tactics, so if they're not prepared already, they're at least not surprised.

B) the bloggers aren't dependent financially - on the hook, as it were - to big, fat paychecks and ego strokes like splashy TV jobs or glamour beats or plum assignments. A LOT of the "mainstream" people have plenty to lose, with their careers, their A-list lifestyles, their kids in private schools, their large mortgages, alimony payments, and other overhead costs. They can't afford to misbehave. Bloggers aren't into that, and don't have any of those nice "perks" that would be seriously at risk if you do misbehave. Bloggers don't have vulnerable spots like that.

This could be their downfall. Besides, the perpetrators here are following their well-established and so-far-sure-fire pattern because they're creatures of habit. They're used to this intimidation working like a charm. But this is a whole different world, with a different set of rules. They don't call the shots here. NOBODY does.

24. Well, they would have to start with the US military bloggers.
DaggerJag, TurningTables, BootsOnTheGround, and someone posting as "monkey man" who may or may not have been killed in that bomb in the mess tent north of Mosul, and another who was actually killed by a roadside bomb in January, to name but five. It is absolutely staggering that US soldiers on active service are allowed to write about their daily lives on the web. Even to someone like me, who has no military connections whatsoever, it is evident that - if you read all of them - you can form a picture of US military priorities and strengths/weaknesses that you would not be able to get from anywhere else. Particularly if a soldier updates his blog in the immediate white-heat anger of having lost comrades in an attack, or while still traumatised by a near-miss: almost inevitably, s/he will GIVE SOMETHING AWAY THAT IS USEFUL TO THE ENEMY. If a British soldier did that, s/he would be in breach of the Official Secrets Act, would be prosecuted and sent to prison for a few years.

29. I don't think full names change anything regarding this.
If they used a nickname and their email addresses, a Republican could still email them pretending to be someone else.

If they used a nickname and a link to their own blogs, a Republican could still get their email addresses from their blogs and pretend to be someone else.

31. This could backfire in another way.
How many people do we have here, just on DU, who describe themselves as former republi-CONS, or in one case, a former Clinton-hater. The reason the word "former" is in there is because they've seen just about enough, or had just about enough. They have been awakened from their Kool-aid stupor. There will be some people out there who see this and start thinking - "hey, wait just a minute! This is going too far! Maybe what the bush-haters were saying about dirty tricks was correct..." And then you have achieved another critical mass. Because if they're gonna start hitting at the bloggers they WILL get to somebody who's in the war zone, or has a loyal patriotic American relative here who doesn't like seeing that voice from the warzone mucked with.

Sounds like the lid on the pressure cooker is getting substantially harder to hold down. Too much is coming to a full boil within.

34. I am trying to form a DU Group on "Preserving Internet Freedom"
I've started a thread on this here:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=109&topic_id=18717
The long OP contains comments on this topic from an older thread that have been transferred to keep them together.

The free internet is the last refuge of free speech in this country. If it goes, so does the last hanging thread of democracy. OF COURSE they'll be going after it, whether by tax or by Patriot Act or by coercion and threats. YOU KNOW THE ATTACK IS COMING. In fact, I feel it has already started.

I doubt the phone calls about AmericaBlog come from Rove's office--he has more effective means at his disposal -- but they are certainly from people who want to crush internet-based political activism, and there are LOADS of them.

WE CANNOT TAKE THE FREE INTERNET FOR GRANTED -- IT MUST BE PROTECTED!!!

38. If things get worse, we will need all of DU on a mirror site
and I expect Patriot Act revisions against that as well. They want to control ALL media -- it's Orwell's 1984, a bit late but just as vile.

It's a good suggestion. And welcome to DU!
