44% still think some 9/11 hijackers were Iraqi !
"More surprising perhaps are the large numbers (albeit not majorities) who believe the following claims not made by the president and which virtually no experts believe to be true:

-- 47 percent believe that Saddam Hussein helped plan and support the hijackers who attacked the U.S. on September 11, 2001 (up six percentage points from November).

-- 44 percent actually believe that several of the hijackers who attacked the U.S. on September 11 were Iraqis (up significantly from 37% in November).

-- 36 percent believe that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction when the U.S. invaded (down slightly from 38% in November)."

Half the country is DELUSIONAL. This is SICKENING. These people are BEYOND HOPE.

America is lost.

5. It does help with the conscience when at the gas pump
Most know, deep down, what it's all about and what is going on. But they weren't raised to be fascist warpigs, they were raised to be good little Christian patriots.

Since "Christian" and "Patriot" are mutually exclusive these days, the less imaginative had to come up with a way to be both. So they created their own little fantasy world. And they still live there.

Ignorance is bliss...until it gets you nuked!

This idiotic conflation of Iraqis and the 9/11 hijackers has reached Orwellian proportions. This probably also helps to explain why so many Americans say such bloodthirsty things on talk radio about the Iraqis. It's pathetic, deplorable and utterly inexcusable.

Sunnis? Kurds? AQ? us? Or a combination of the four?

There will never be a stable Iraq as long as there is oil to be pumped from the ground in that country. Or until we rid ourselves of the Big Oil/PNAC club that runs our government today.

I do not know who they were but the ones involved in the bombings of Shiite gatherings and in specific the burial of one already dead following the elections. Does it really matter when what they are doing is essentially a hate crime since it targets one group? They are assholes plain and simple no matter what groups they are affiliated with. Humans committing hate crimes against other humans in an attempt to control and discourage them through use of violence.

60. Where did this come from?
I was referring to the criminals in Iraq committing hate crimes against Shiite Muslims as they gathered over the last few days. It has nothing to do with those opposing our troops or our government policy, only those who saw fit to blow up civilians because they disagreed with election results.

61. Yes, but who are the criminals?
That's the problem, we don't know who the 'they' are. There is no free and independent press allowed to report in Iraq. How do you know we aren't behind the bombings?

The last thing this administration wants is a stable, free, and united Iraq. Because then there'd be no justification for the ongoing occupation and control of their oil. We are already seedng the resistance there.

The same people who were destabilizing Central America in the 80s are in charge today.....I doubt that they've changed their stripes.

11. Nominated for Greatest Page w/ a sick feeling in my stomach...
But not too surprised. Look at polls of the number of Americans who believe aliens have visited Earth. Look at polls of the number of Americans who believe in the Devil.

I caused a small controversy when I spoke to one of my college classes about how out of touch Bush voters were. I showed the poll data from the University of Maryland (Delaware?) project which showed just that. Most of my students seemed confused that there were no Iraqis on the 9/11 hijacked flights. There is a law in North Carolina that says that state-funded employes should not try to influence the election several weeks before Election Day. So apparently, I'm not supposed to discuss political issues in a college class. The way I get around this is I ignore it.

.

.

With the Media Spin Machine in the US, whaddya expect?

Of course, INDIVIDUALS DO have the choice not to clik on/watch CNN, Fox and the like, who spend more time "dramatizing/manicuring" their news for media consumption than responsibly reportng NEWS

I'll bet you that NOWHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD does such a high percentage believe that propoganda.

Of course, alot of Americans have/want to believe it, cuz they are paying for it big time; in international criticism, dollars, and blood.

So sad.

Murderous carnage continues at the behest of ignorant voters . . .

27. Is this really the U.S. media's fault though?
Anybody that pays attention to any major U.S. media news outlet (including even FOX News) would know that the three things listed in the bullet points of the original post are false. I'm not saying that the media doesn't have a horrible right-wing bias, nor am I saying that they don't get their facts wrong in their haste to report a juicy looking story. But the case is they haven't persisted in perpetuating the myths listed in the original post.

For instance, in the month or two after the invasion they may have been constantly jumping the gun with reports that WMD had been found, but in the last year and a half any reports on WMD in Iraq have centered around why we never found any. Even if someone watched nothing but FOX, they'd know there were no WMD's in Iraq. The problem in this particular case isn't the folks who follow FOX religiously, but rather people who don't pay attention to the news and get their knowledge of the world from third or fourth hand accounts of what others saw on FOX and CNN.

Because they won't confront the truth of what they really know. This junta LIHOP'd 9/11 and they lied about Iraq's involveent/WMD to jumpstart the PNAC plan. We are now what our parent's generation fought in WW2.

Truth sucks, much better to construct a fantasy world and keep wondering who'll be the next person kicked off "Survivor".

37. You might be right
To be fair to the mainstream media in this case, even FOX News as you say, none of them claimed the BS in these cases that people believe, and IIRC at one point FOX, NBC, CBS, ABC, WaPo, and other major news sources had big banner headlines about the lack of WMD's and Iraqi non-involvement in the 9/11 attacks. All also addressed with puzzlement people's conflation of Iraqis and the Sept. 11 attacks. So this isn't the fault of the mainstream media AFAIK-- it's attributable by willful ignorance and bellicosity among a large segment of hawkish people.

but doesn't deny the fact that anyone who's been watching the news on any major channel from 3/2003 to 2/2005 would know that the things listed in the bulletpoints in the original post aren't true.

I'm not arguing that the media is doing a good job. I'm just saying that they are no more responsible for the misperceptions listed in the original post than they are for the fact that a large percentage of the U.S. population can't find Iraq on a map or tell you who their senators are, etc.

65. But should people HAVE to dig for the truth in America?
The thing about the Bushits is they say one thing and then another until the issue is so confused that a person has to dig back through facts and there is a lot of smoke going on to keep you from finding that.

Paying people to report as truth things that are nothing more than spin is also something we haven't seen this much of in the past, unless you go back to the McCarthy era.

I'm still of the opinion that if the government is pushing propoganda and the media is reporting it as fact and burying real facts like the protest in Belgium on page A-8 and under-reporting the attendance to boot, that is the media playing the game with the power instead of standing up to it.

The journalistic media is supposed to be part of this Country's watchdog community. If they are taking kibbles from the government and letting them run wild on the homestead at night, they are doing much less than a good job, they are abusing their first ammendment rights by lying to us.

Now if it was only opinion shows, that would be one thing, but to report as factual news only what the pRes thinks should play as facts and burying any conflicting information is unfair representation.

to know that the three things in the bullet points of the original post are false. That's my point. Even somebody that only watches FOX News and only watches it for a limited amount of time each day would know these things aren't true. The U.S. media daily commits a multitude of sins, but this isn't one of them. This is purely the result of a large chunk of the U.S. population taking zero effort towards keeping themselves informed about the world.

what Giant Patsies they were and try and deny the holocaust, etc. It will be the same for some freepers. And the rest of the world will help America hit a soft landing. So these folk may never stand out - there will be too many of them. But such a sad thing when you see some person who's most important moment in life was a series of emotions induced in them (to form a reality) by the sociopaths in power.

Very sad indeed. But real leadership will break on through all the crap and tell these people that it was a 'questionable war'. So that they are semi brought back to reality.

And hopefully there will be legislation put in place so that anyone close to power has to pass a 'means' test on their humanity.

70. Have you seen what's on TV lately?
Half-wit sitcoms with enforced laugh tracks to clue people when to laugh at the bad jokes, puppy documentaries on PBS, ten flavors of "reality" TV shows to suck time off your life with, sports channels that bring in meaningless opportunities to fill your head with stats and watch overpaid college dropouts run around, news shows sponsored and muzzled by the defense contractor multinational corporations that own them, money-changing Jesus preacher shows spreading hate and whimpering for your money, shopping channels that try to sell you wares you'd never buy and talk shows that feature the seamier, stupid side of America.

Dog food. Rotten worm-filled dog food. For your brain. No wonder people are stupid.

72. Did you see the numbers about Iraq having been a "serious threat?" oy.
Edited on Tue Feb-22-05 09:01 AM by bunkerbuster1
"Iraq, under Saddam Hussein, was a serious threat to U.S. security."

A year ago, 63% agreed. Now it's all the way down to... 61%.

It's like this country has learned nothing. Nothing at all.

74. One line in your post...
One line in your post brought tears to my eyes -- America is lost. The rest is indicative of a disease that has taken hold and refuses to let go -- willful ignorance. I love this country, but God dammit you hit the nail on the head. America, the once beautiful and virtuous, is lost.
