7. There's a good shot of Joe Bidden almost falling out of his
chair because he was laughing so hard at some of Robin Williams' remarks.

This really is must watch video.

For us dial up folks -- this take a bit of time to download but well worth the wait. Plus you can play it repeatedly -- and it doesn't get boring.

in disguise. Don't look for any sympathy here - everything bad that happens to these fools stems from the fact that NOBODY can live up to the pure standards that they set. They continue to suffer from the same miscalculation over and over again - like Bart Simpson getting electrocuted over and over again - never to learn a damned thing...

He was hitting on all cylinders, except for a short segment of Bush-sucking (about the elections in Iraq).

Particularly his comment on high schoolers and the First Amendment --"If you don't learn the First Amendment, you don't DESERVE Social Security!" Dead on!

And when he did stray, Robin Williams was there to challenge him and bring him back to reality!

38. not that funny
As a gay guy, perhaps I'm very sensitive to jokes about gay sexuality, but I find it discomforting that so many people still get such a kick out of gay sex jokes. Actually, jokes about any kind of sex can get an audience roaring with laughter. I don't get it.

I think it just shows how immature and uncomfortable people are with open discussions about sex. I mean, for cryin' out loud, people still think that jokes about Monica Lewinsky are funny. I'm glad I'm more sophisticated than that.

In my opinion, the news is that an imposter somehow got security clearance and access to the President. All of the "tee hee" and laughter about Gannon's association with the sex industry is as obnoxious and distracting as the jokes about Monica Lewinsky were back in the Clinton years.

42. nah...
If you listen with a sensitive ear, there's no question that people think it's "extra" hilarious because the situation is associated not only with gay sex, but with gay sex for profit.

I know that what people find funny is a reflection of the society and culture. It's just that the audience's laughter is a somewhat painful reminder that simply being gay (to many people) is outrageous, scandalous, and/or something that should be hidden.

Believe me, I have a great sense of humor. But I see the same thing when I catch a glimpse of the gay character on Will and Grace, or Carson from Queer Eye For The Straight Guy, who incidentally, has become the media's favorite "queer" - have you noticed? Lots of people still enjoy seeing gay men as either clowns or sexual deviants. In fact, many of them can ONLY see gay men in those ways, because they still can't handle seeing gays as a normal part of society.

C-SPAN had a brief call-in period last week for viewers to comment on the Jeff Gannon story. Many of the callers emphasized the words GAY MALE PROSTITUTE - and these were liberals who understandably used those words to make the Bush White House look bad. Wouldn't it be nice if those words were meaningless in this situation?

43. well, except for the prostitution
because of its particularly perfect analogy to the more pressing situation at hand. and, its illegal.

The 'gay male' part is just another drop in the hypocrisy ocean that is the right. If it keeps the story 'interesting' enough to keep it in the news, I'll take it.

50. So if Gannon were a straight female prostitute
no one would be laughing? Hell yes they would! Because a.) prostitution is illegal and, b.) BushCo has set itself up as having brought "dignity to the WH", along with being morally pure and Christian. They have advanced themselves by using homophobia and a mantra which includes "just say no to premarital sex". They hypocrisy and irony here is simply too rich to ignore!

53. Gerbil jokes are tired, in my opinion
Unfortunately, there are many who do believe that gay guys shove gerbils up their asses on a regular basis. Maher's joke about gerbils reinforces that stereotype.

I was also a sex worker for several years, so maybe this news story hits a little too close to home. Luckily, I don't have a TV, so for the most part, I'm only exposed to the Gannon story when I visit DU.

61. Get a sense of humor
The only reason Maher mentions gerbils is that Rush has this fetish about them and the right will immediately get the joke... and shudder.

It's the hypocrisy that's so funny - family values gets a prostitute right up the backside and a big, honking male prostitute to boot.

got caught "doin it" with a prostitute it was a wonderful day in the neighborhood for me. Keith Olberman still uses him as his #1 public apology, (that crying wing nut). It was the absolute hypocrisy of Stewart that made the whole thing so entertaining.

Clinton did lie about his affair but he also never stood on a pulpit denouncing adultery. That is the difference. We all knew he was kind of a slut and we loved him anyway because he never put down sluts! (And all you sluts out there - get over it!)

They highlight the incredible hypocrisy of the entire American social setup.

The U.S. is the most prurient of all "civilized" societies because they're the most sexually repressed. That's why it's fine to demonize and oppress any perceived sexual "deviance" as defined by those who own and control the means of propoganda (read mass media).

The U.S. is the most ignorant and intolerant of all "civilized" societies when it comes to other cultures, countries and the non-dominant race -- white people. They're totally ignorant of the way others lead their lives and cannot ascibe humanity to anyone that doesn't look, act and talk like them.

The U.S. has the strongest, richest aristocracy of any society from any time and hides it well. The huge gap between the very few winners of the capitalist economic game and the vast majority of losers is proof of this but, again, the propoganda arm of this society will not let this new leak.

Unfortunately, we live in the most powerful empire in the history of the world and as a result (maybe the cause) also live in the most hypocritical, ignorant and evil setup ever devised by the few to keep control over the many.

To paraphrase a great man whose murder 40 years ago we acknowledge today, Malcolm X, this situation must be changed "by any means necessary"!

Remember when people told Polish jokes all the time? If someone tells a Polish joke in 2005, they're either given a strange look or thought of as pitiful.

I would hope that we can get to a point where gay jokes are treated the same way.

46. This was the relief I needed
After all of the heartburn from the Bush admin, this was the release and the perspective that pulls it all together.

Robin Williams, you haven't been this pointed since Good Morning Viet Nam!.

And Lesley Stahl, my dear, you are the essence of that old phrase:

Payback is a bitch.

A story that has EVERY SINGLE EMOTIONAL TRIGGER that was used by the RW to discredit an opponent is present in this story. Intelligence failure, homosexuality, sex scandal, prostitution.

Could this get any more sleazy?

49. Leslie Stahl was great
If you ignore every other facet of the story, how does this fake get through the security check?

I'm glad she said it because she's clearly in a position to know what getting that press pass is like.

59. Daily passes
It's my understanding that the bush admin bypassed the normal security vetting by issueing "gannon" a daily pass at the door...every day.

http://mediamatters.org/

http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2005/02/10/gannon_affair/

" Gannon reportedly did not have what's known as a "hard pass" for the White House press room, which allows journalists to enter daily without getting prior approval each time. Instead Gannon picked up a daily pass by contacting the White House press office each morning and asking for clearance. Mark Smith, vice president of the White House Correspondents Association, says it's up to White House officials to decide whom they want to wave in each day. "They don't consult us." If they had, Smith says, he would have been "very uncomfortable" granting Gannon the same access as professional journalists.

And the association never would have backed a reporter using an alias. Says Pinkerton: "If was walking around the White House with a pass that had a different name on it than his real name, that's pretty remarkable." Smith, who covers the White House for Associated Press radio, says he "could have sworn" that he saw credentials around Gannon's neck with the name "Jeff Gannon" on them.

"Somebody was waving him into the White House every day," notes David Brock, president and CEO of Media Matters for America, an online liberal advocacy group that led the way in raising questions about Gannon and Talon News. "

87. Please don't include "homosexuality" in that litany of bad things...
I've been biting my tongue on this for a week, since I know we can't just ignore the fact that the prostitute was prostituting himself to men, so "gay" comes into the scandal... but to put it on par with the other words in this sentence "Intelligence failure, homosexuality, sex scandal, prostitution" is a problem when you follow it up with "Could this get any more sleazy?" No different than a fundamentalist mixing it into a list a deviances (rape, child molestation, etc.), as they always do. I know that wasn't your intention, but this constant undercurrent of bias is starting to affect me.

And not addressed to you but in general, the gerbil thing was WAY over the top, and though I can appreciate the humor, it only serves to solidify some people's perception of gay men being deviant sexually... Never in my life have I met or even heard of a man doing that (aside from the stupid rumors about Richard Gere).

90. Please don't misunderstand me
There is nothing wrong with being homosexual.

But the same people who are career gay-bashers are also the biggest closet queens on the planet.

For what its worth, the sleaze is the fact that the guy is supposed to be this clean-cut RW supporter, but he is a gay prostitute.

Just like in NAZI Germany, Hitler's inner circle (and possibly Hitler himself) were notorious anti-homosexual propagandists, but were known homosexuals themselves.

This is the same kind of sleaze that befalls ALL sex scandals. The guy was involved in prostitution, which is a felony. He also worked for a made-up news front. Lying, cheating, prostitution. No late-night cable TV movie could come close to having all of these elements fit together.

But in the end, I think that the homosexual issue is being pushed hard because of the hypocrisy. Look at these fools on the RW power binge. They HATE homosexuals, but they ARE homosexuals. These people are so very dangerous, and the contradictions and strong words of prejudice that they spout are where we can expose them.

91. I didn't misunderstand you, that's why I said that I know you didn't mean
anything by it... I was just pointing out how a gay person might perceive "homosexuality" being included in a list... Falwell uses that trick as does Limbaugh and Santorum.

Absolutely, it is ironic that one of the very things vilified by the right wing may be part of the scandal that brings them down amid their own hypocrisy. We are not disagreeing.

So you see what I mean however, about including it in a list of things, that just by association "homosexuality" itself becomes scandalous? In this post you didn't do it (saying "Lying, cheating, prostitution") so I assume you understand me.

He is totally worth paying the extra $20 a month for HBO. The DU, Air America, and Bill Mahr are the only things that keep me sane. :-)

Even though Maher and Williams were hysterical, both Biden and Stahl brought salient points, not having anything to do with sexual orientation or even party.

I hope this clip is playing EVERYWHERE!!!
