8. Gonzo & Gidget. Gone.
It reminds me of Mr. Mike's Bedtime Stories.

10. Sigh.
A bad day. I was an adoring John Raitt fan when I was a wee child. He was a larger-than-life guy with huge talent and charisma.

6. Like the two extreme ends of American pop culture of the '60s
the totally establishment teen culture idol, and the totally anti-establishment gonzo anti-hero journalist.

7. Tammy and Dr. Gonzo...................
certainly two very different ends of the same American culture spectrum. Sandra Dee certainly couldn't have gone any further in her direction. She was as sweet and syrupy as she could be.

Hunter's direction was simply put, 'out there'. He seemed like a man that was violently yanked in a direction by some unseen force and then not only coped there, but made that direction his bitch.

Of the two, Hunter's contribution will be missed the most. At least by myself. He was a force that shaped my very own persona in the 60's and 70's, and although I never reached the place where Hunter dwelt, (few, if any, do) he showed me an alternate reality to "Tammy" and what all the "cool kids" at the time were thinking and doing. That alternate reality still exists, but has been greatly diminished by his unfortunate demise.

In the end, I think Hunter just couldn't take the yanking anymore. The ultimate horror of being a man.

13. "Imitation of Life"
Has anybody seen this 1959 Sandra Dee movie? I'm only 23 so I didn't see it right when it came out, obviously, but I watched it twice now on AMC and it is absolutely amazing. The song that Mahalia Jackson sings in it made my cry for twenty minutes!

I liked Hunter S. Thompson's political writings but I couldn't watch all of "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas."
