O.K. Time for a Gannon Coverage List: Who's covered the Story?
Edited on Mon Feb-21-05 01:56 PM by Up2Late
Time to make a list of who and what type of Media has covered the story that YOU, Personally, have heard, read or seen on T.V.

I'll Start (Please try not to repeat sitings from higher in the list):
Also, if you'd like, give the report a Grade (A+ thru D- or F)

The Daily Show (2) 1 official (A+), 1 accidental (A)

NPR (4)
All Things Considered, February 9, 2005 (A-)
Morning Edition, February 14, 2005 (B+)
Day to Day, February 15, 2005 (B -)
Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me! Feb. 19, 2005 (A+)

CNN (3) Wolf Blitzer (D-)
Andersen Cooper (A-)
Evening Edition (B+)

New York Times (2 that I've seen)
Maureen Dowed (A)

I presume that the initial poster only wanted Imperial Amerikan sources, not Free World sources.

8. Oh God yes, HOW could we forget KEITH OLBERMANN?
He's been all over this one like a cheap suit. Bless him! Repeatedly interviewing Dana Milbank of the Washington Post in these segments, and Dana Milbank acts as though he's desperate to keep that stick up his butt from becoming dislodged - seems like he's awfully afraid to rock the boat, even though he's dancing around on the edges of it.

14. He's had it as his "lead" in several shows by now -
Edited on Mon Feb-21-05 02:27 PM by calimary
well, if you consider number five in the top-5 countdown - which he presents FIRST. But it's always been the opening story.

Had Dana Milbank on, too, several times (from the Washington Post - who looks like he could use a good enema, frankly - sure reeks of not wanting to get TOO deeply into this or speak out of turn), AND the Editor and Publisher guy about half as frequently.

Also, his Bloggermann blog online:

http://www.bloggermann.com/

E-mail: KOlbermann@MSNBC.com (alias Keith Olbermann)

He's done a darn good job, too. Mentioned all the details that should be mentioned. His interviews are pretty much worthless, though, because neither Milbank nor the E&P guy seem inclined to want to stick their necks out too far - at least not yet, and I'd suspect they agree to be on the show if the interview about this doesn't put them in too dicey a positoin - at least not yet.

Most of the guests seem still to be treading AWFULLY lightly. However, if this really starts taking off and somebody reaches critical mass and decides it's time to do a Woodward/Bernstein (could also be because somebody UPSTAIRS in the executive offices or the senior producers or the director of news reaches that critical mass and decides to throw off the rove shackles) then nobody will care anymore WHAT is said or HOW dicey it gets. They'll be going for blood.

And THAT is our job at the moment - to coax it toward that critical mass point.

------------------

And OMG - how did I forget Jon Stewart? He even had the bleeped-out Manly photo on as the moment of zen, along with putz-head asking his smug, self-righteous, in-yer-face question.

I'd give the Jon Stewart coverage an A+ because they just pull no punches at all. Same for the Bill Maher show. Comedy does give you some cover.

Olbermann gets an A. His interviews are semi-worthless - probably only because the subjects don't want to stick their necks out too far. But A for effort, and for the fact that he's a mainstreamer doing this much, and for the "flavor" and perspective he brings to his coverage. But DAMN I'd like to see him run an interview with some meat to it. HE should be the one getting the Americablog guy on, instead of just referring to him and the Daily Kos guy.

6. CNN did it this past weekend - I believe it was Carol Lin's show
and they had - I THINK - the Americablog guy.

And don't forget CATHERINE CRIER on Court TV. And she was asking all the questions that need to be asked.

Also, "once-removed" - "Real Time with Bill Maher" on HBO - the February 18th show - it's being rerun all week, check your listings! - with Joe Biden actually making some standout comments indicating he's miffed about the things that everyone SHOULD be miffed about; and a segment with LESLIE STAHL of "60 Minutes" - where he was asking her all the questions that need to be asked. Hopefully he was able to plant some in her semi-cement head. She kept going back to "HOW'D he get past the Secret Service and FBI clearances, HOW'D he get that pass," as though fixated on just that much. But hey, it's a start. BILL MAHER needs some attaboys, too. AS DOES BIDEN. And Leslie Stahl needs some nagging.

KPFT-FM Houston/Galveston had the Americablog guy on in a show yesterday, good interview.

29. Frank Rich's post is pretty good (see link) - but what on earth
is it doing in the arts section???

"...By my count, "Jeff Gannon" is now at least the sixth "journalist" (four of whom have been unmasked so far this year) to have been a propagandist on the payroll of either the Bush administration or a barely arms-length ally like Talon News while simultaneously appearing in print or broadcast forums that purport to be real news...."

"... When the Bush administration isn't using taxpayers' money to buy its own fake news, it does everything it can to shut out and pillory real reporters who might tell Americans what is happening in what is, at least in theory, their own government. ..."

And didn't Katie Couric talk about it a bit too? I don't watch or listen to either so I can't grade them.

What I'm wondering is if the story is picking up speed or is dying. We really need to be absolutely positively relentless over this story-just like the rethugs-otherwise it'll be gone in a week. Time to write and do some calling.

That's why, despite the Guckert fiasco, I do not begrudge Web journalists their access to government press rooms. I want to see more access granted to a press corps that is as diverse as the people we serve.
