Congressman Says Rove Planted CBS Memos
Edited on Mon Feb-21-05 02:33 PM by CatWoman
Yesterday Congressman Maurice Hinchey (D-NY) hosted a community forum in Ithaca, New York, on The Future Of Social Security.

An LGF reader was present in the audience and happened to be recording as Rep. Hinchey launched into a barking moonbat conspiracy rant worthy of Democratic Underground, telling the audience he believed the fake CBS memos were planted by Karl Rove to discredit Dan Rather, and divert attention from President Bush’s “draft dodging.”

When our reader asked Hinchey if he had evidence for these charges, he first said, “Yes, I do,” but when asked a second time he admitted he did not.

Our reader pressed the issue, “Don’t you think it’s irresponsible to make charges like that?” Hinchey replied, “No, I don’t, I think it’s very important to make charges like that ... I think it’s very important to combat this kind of activity in every way that you can, and I’m willing, as most people are not, to step forward in situations like this and take risks.”

And the crowd burst into applause and cheering.

3. I hope this gets people to talking critically about Pollsters SOON!
Their so refined now to the point of being able to custom engineer polling "results", or the outcomes that are fed to us, "this is what you think about yada yada".

4. If he has evidence, I'd like him to present it
I'd love to hang this on the White House propaganda and dirty tricks department as much as anybody, but so far I haven't seen anything but idle speculation. Is there anything that would hold up in court?

He knows how Karl Rove works.

25. Operation Mockingbird is well documented; Army's PsyOps is too
Operation Mockingbird can be googled and as for "CNN and PsyOps" article by Alexander Cockburn of counterpunch.com from March 2000 you should have no problem finding that either.

In fact, the Army's military intelligence groups operating domestically are responsible for more surveillance on Dr. Martin Luther King than the FBI. Look into that bit of domestic psyops on the Nobel Peace Prize winner in Wm. Pepper's books on the assassination and ask yourselve if the military would want any further 'blowback' coming its way. I doubt it.

12. Depends what you mean by communism.
If you mean a single Party structure with a cult-like adoration of their Maximum Leader or a chronic inability to admit your wrong or support for a news media that's a mouthpiece for the political party or a disregard for individual liberties or a special, wealthy class in the Party that has special rules for them....no, I'd say it's alive and well in today's Republican Party.

8. I suspect Rove did, but it's irresponsible for Hinchey
to first say he has evidence and then to admit that he doesn't.

If Hinchey had just said something like: "Knowing what we know about Rove's previous dirty tricks, it's reasonable to suspect he may have played a role in something like this too." Then he could have given the litany of Rovian tactics from the past that would have certainly given his speculation a strong foundation.

His "flip flop" only serves to arm conservatives like the ones who read LGF with more ammo for dismissing and discrediting the many legitimate suspicions we have about Rove underhandedness.

20. "conservatives" are a lost cause
Who gives a damn what they think. It's MUCH more important that any intelligent, informed speculation about the obvious crimes of the repukes be voiced, no YELLED out to the body politic at every opportunity.

Remember, the repukes are listening to their own choir just as we are here but the general public only hears whatever is shouted out loudest and most often. Right now they ONLY hear the right-wing foaming at the mouth on fox, etc.

The silence of the dems over the last 11 years has caused this situation not the "conservatives ... dismissing and discrediting ... legitimate suspicions".

23. Right, and Hinchey backtracking like that only weakens our argument
I don't care what the fascists think about what he said; I'm concerned that they can use (as they are on that site) his backing down to say: "Look at those lying Democrats...caught them in another one."

Silence is one thing (and you're right, that has hurt us and this country perhaps irrevocably), but so is making reckless accusations that don't stand up to scrutiny. Doing that only diminishes and discredits our case.

If we're going to be foaming at the mouth like the fascists, we better damn well have a bite to back up it with.

16. Also something on Democracy Now today
http://www.democracynow.org/article.pl?sid=05/02/21/1458213

On this the 40th anniversary of the assassination of Malcolm X, we spend the hour with historian Manning Marable who has spent a decade working on a new biography of Malcolm X. He is one of the few historians to see the three missing chapters from "The Autobiography of Malcolm X" that he says paint a very different picture than the book with Alex Haley and Spike Lee's film. Marable has also had unprecedented access to Malcolm's family and documents that shed new light on the involvement of the New York Police, the FBI and possibly the CIA in Malcolm X's assassination. Manning today called on the federal government to release all remaining classified documents on Malcolm X.

14. Well, duh ! Rove is the guy who gave J H Hatfield the coke story
on Bush--all the while knowing Hatfield's criminal record would make HIM the real target. Rove is darned good at this stuff.

""Hatfield had previously refused to reveal the source of his information about Bush’s alleged cocaine arrest. He now to decided to name him. He claimed it was none other than Karl Rove, Bush’s closest political adviser.

If Rove did indeed leak the information, he couldn’t have leaked it to a better subject. Soon after publication of the Fortunate Son, Hatfield’s credibility came under fierce attack.

The media followed the trail laid out for them. They diverted inquiries about Bush’s drug history to stories about Hatfield’s checkered past. He lost two other book contracts and faced financial ruin and obscurity."" from

15. Well then, this guy needs an "attaboy."
Cong. Maurice Hinchey (D-NY) needs some calcium supplement for his spine. Granted, if the crowd did indeed burst into some very validating applause and cheering, he got some while he was there. But he's gonna have to go back to the Belly of the Beast, and he'll need some more.

www.congress.org - for details how to contact him, locally, or in DC.

Guys - when these people do something good, they NEED to be rewarded for it. Just picture Pavlov's dogs.

21. I met Maurice Hinchey
Many years ago in upstate N.Y. -- my 2nd ex-wife had worked on his campaigns. We were visiting my ex's old stomping grounds on a vacation and were walking to our car and there was Maurice walking on the sidewalk too, just like real people. He was a Congressman then too.

I read him to be a real, stand-up, intelligent guy. One of the few politicians I have ever seen or met who really should be there.

All of us should support Maurice as much as we can in any way we can...

19. We need more Dems willing to step up
& point out what seems obvious to most of us. When there is no proof we do need to be careful about making declarative statements as though they were facts. However, there is nothing wrong with making statements which question conventional thought, and probe deeper into a scandal.
The author of this article does not write a direct quote of the comment Rep.Hinchey made regarding Rove & memo gate, so we do not know the context of the comment nor the manner in which the statement was made.

For me, I'm happy anytime a Dem has the courage to question the thugs that have overtaken our Nation.

22. "I HAVE MY OWN BELIEFS"
Maurice: "Now, I mean, I have my own beliefs about how that happened: it originated with Karl Rove, in my belief, in the White House. They set that up with those false papers. Why did they do it? They knew that Bush was a draft dodger. They knew that he had run away from his responsibilties in the Air National Guard in Texas, gone out of the state intentionally for a long period of time. They knew that he had no defense for that period in his life. And so what they did was, expecting that that was going to come up, they accentuated it: they produced papers that made it look even worse. And they — and they distributed those out to elements of the media. And it was only — what, like was it CBS? Or whatever, whatever which one Rather works for. They — the people there — they finally bought into it, and they, and they aired it. And when they did, they had ’em. They didn’t care who did it! All they had to do is to get some element of the media to advance that issue. Based upon the false papers that they produced."

24. Thanks for the correction, I didn't scroll down far enough
to another poster.

So, indeed, he framed his statement in the most respossible manner. I heard the freepers are up in arms that a Dem would actually question the integrity of people within the administration. Do they ever stop and ask themselves if they shouldn't be looking a little closer themselves?
