Mein Fuhrer, your European charm offensive is going magnificently
From the GOP website-- the message for the day from RNC Chairman Ken Mehlman. One word: sycophant.

Republicans Embrace Unity, Democrats Just Say No

The media is catching on to the Democrats new mantra: no, no, no. In a U.S. News and World Report op-ed, Gloria Borger suggests that David Spade, of most recent fame for Capitol One ads where he finds multiple ways for saying no, should be the spokesman for the Democratic Party. While Republicans propose solutions for a changing America, Democrats prefer to do-nothing rather than compromise.

Borger: "Social Security reform? No. Clear some judges? No way, Jose. Find some agreement on national security? Not yet. Sure, the Democrats are struggling to find their voice ... But it's also too bad they're allowing themselves to look like a bunch of minority naysayers ... the Democrats are becoming the party of no. ..."

Meanwhile, across the globe, President Bush is meeting with our European allies to garner support for maintaining a peaceful Iraq and to encourage our allied leaders to renew their commitment to democracy. President Bush's speech in Brussels received wide coverage.

NBC Nightly News reported, "With progress for democracy a major theme today, Mr. Bush singled out Russia ahead of this week's meeting with President Putin for his crackdown on political dissent." President Bush: "The US and all European countries should place democratic reform at the heart of their dialogue with Russia."

CBS Evening News' John Roberts said, "As charm offensives go, President Bush couldn't have asked for a better kickoff today. He found out he'll get backing from all the NATO members to help train Iraqi security forces. In exchange, the President promised full engagement on an issue key to Europeans: Peace between Israel and the Palestinians." President Bush: "The world must not rest until there is a just and lasting resolution of this conflict."

You can read more about the speech in Brussels and the President's tough stance towards Russia from the mainstream printed press: Washington Post, New York Times, Los Angeles Times.

10. Yes -- as amazing as it is disgusting. Proof of the echo chamber
And I'm more than a little disappointed in Gloria Borger (not that I held her out as any sort of liberal media wonder) --

The GOP floats the "Democrats are the Party of No" meme a week or so ago, and it finally took -- in the form of a piece by Gloria Borger. So here is the RNC quoting Gloria as an authority on the subject. If a journalist says it, it must be true. Nevermind where the journalist GOT it was the RNC's talking points.

19. Yes, and if you listen to CNN's coverage of Blogs you'd believe
that the vast majority of blogs are Republican. Only those trouble making liberal elitists occasionally HURT good journalists like Gannon ... the two broads who just concluded their segment on CNN were completely "off the mark" and only pseudo-cute.

What's up with the Corporate Media TELLING us what this the main focus on the Internet and Political Blogs?

I despise the American Corporate Media now ... they don't even try to hide their right wing bias and focus on info-tainment instead of investigative journalism.

How can these shameless shills (TV journalists) look at themselves in the mirror is a mystery to me.

4. that one stopped me cold, too.
Since the US invasion of Iraq has there even been ONE DAY there that was peaceful? I guess that's not the track record they want to "maintain."

7. A few days ago, I read an article that quoted a general
discussing avoiding civilian casualties. The article clearly stated that every day a bomb is dropped in Iraq.

Maintaining something that doesn't exist. What else could "maintaining peace" mean?

5. Let's hear it for the rainbow tour. It's been an incredible success.
We weren't quite sure, we had a few doubts. Would Dubya win through. But the answer is (a qualified) yes.

With apologies to ALW and a different Rice.

11. I figure Dubya is definitely Evita material
The other song that runs, slightly mangled, through my head is "Don't cry for me, San Anton-yo"

13. Remember the Vice President song? I don't have the cd anymore
so I can't go back and check, but I think of that song whenever I accidentally catch a glimpse of Cheney, and sometimes when I see Rice.

8. Isn't Mehlman the guy who won't say which side of the plate
Edited on Tue Feb-22-05 07:45 PM by rzemanfl
he bats from? Where are the reports from Belgium about the tear gas, firebombs etc.? "Charm" my ass! This bozo is driving me nuts and so are all the media ass kissers. The election was in November and I still say "asshole" out loud every time I see a car with a * sticker. I started smoking again after the election fiasco and am trying to quit again, that's *'s fault too. This is a "veritable vortex of vituperative whatever..."

Sometimes I think that all DU does for us is keep us grounded in the reality-based universe. I feel like I did when I was a 14 year-old kid, everything is out of my control.

16. lay off the cigarettes...
we need you to stay alive and healthy, so that you can help counteract these oinkers.

I confess that I also haven't been able to put the 2004 election behind me. The statistical evidence that it was stolen keeps getting more and more convincing. I've been doing some activism w/r/t the rigged election, including putting up signs about it all over town, taking out ads, and hanging up "Deception Dollars" with two-sided tape inside places like Target and grocery stores.

I'm concentrating on flyering all the chains that refused to let me (and my helpers) do non-partisan voter registration last year. A tinge of revenge is always a helpful motivator, although mostly I'm just trying to get the truth out there in front of people.

The Deception Dollars look like money and people always dive for them. I'm almost out of my 2000 stolen election dollars, and I'm ordering some more. I had my husband buy me 2000 anti-war dollars for my birthday last week. They should hire me as their head salesman, because I've gotten all my progressive friends to start distributing these dollars, too.

It's good emotional therapy to take up activism. It'll take your mind off the cigarettes, too.

24. Somehow I figured that "Texas Lawyer" would be a male, don't
Edited on Wed Feb-23-05 07:00 PM by rzemanfl
know why. I practiced law for 25 years myself then gave it up for my sanity and being able to go to the beach eight months a year instead of plugging in my engine heater at night in the Winter. I can't imagine having to deal with people who were both lawyers AND Texans, no offense, but you must get to deal with some real prize assholes.

I will check out that website. Still haven't smoked. I had gone 15 months without after 42 years of smoking, but when my wife refused to even consider moving to Costa Rica early in the morning of November 3rd I started up again.

12. Propaganda puke
But no? No is a good thing.

As I tell my kids, "No means No."

I think the Dems could stick with that. If you say No, mean it. End of story. No war in Iran. No messing with social security.

17. Gloria Borger fails to recognize that leadership means saying No to bad
ideas by those who are in charge.

Proposing a different agenda to address different problems probably never accorded to the air-headed Borger.

18. And here are some other things they've said "No" to:
1) Voting to challenge the Ohio electoral results

2) Voting against Condi for Secretary of State

3) Voting against Gonzales for Atty General

How come I didn't see THOSE items in this fair and balanced appraisal? I mean, IF ONLY they were really as described in this article...

22. I've heard that the best way to defeat your opponent in a debate
is to be able to know the other side's position so well that you can argue it better than they could. This then aids you in your ability to better dismantle their untruths point by point. Thus, I almost always find it useful to get glimpses of how they're thinking on the "other side" - especially 'cause I don't have a strong enough stomach to go over there myself, most of the time! :puke:

23. I think posting this stuff serves as a great reminder
Edited on Wed Feb-23-05 05:01 PM by TexasLawyer
of what we're up against. We can call the RNC flacks "hypocrites" and "liars" but to see them in action really brings home those charges. I've gotten flamed occasionally for posting this kind of thing, but I think it's worthy of DU-er time.

90% of what I post has nothing to do with reporting on the words of freepers, RW-ers, etc... But I think it's educational and important (and sometimes unintentionally funny). Here's what I wrote on another thread, where I posted a really obnoxious e-mail from Ann Coulter:

Ever since a guy I work with, and who I had believed was very, very intelligent, started saying things like, "God, I hate the French" (during the whole "freedom fries" tempest in a teapot) I have been trying to figure out where people get this crap. How can you counter what they're saying if you don't know what they're saying?

I signed up on the mailing list for super RW "Move America Forward" and I think they put me on some other e-mail lists.

Also, I tune into RW hate radio sometimes. I always have a pad of paper when I listen, and I write down the advertisers. Then I call or write to let them know that they are sponsoring hate, and to tell them exactly what poison Rush or Sean or whoever spewed right before or after their ad played. I've actually had some success.

Anyway, if you think I'm trying to promote Ann Coulter's magazine on DU, well, this is a pretty dumb place to come looking for customers. I don't think this will get Ann any business-- only laughs, disgust, and pity.
