Late Hunter S. Thompson wanted ashes to be fired from a cannon : friend
US author Hunter S. Thompson, who committed suicide last weekend, wanted to exit this world in a style befitting his extraordinary life: being fired from a cannon, a friend revealed.

The larger-than-life father of writer of "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" stated in his will that he wanted his ashes to be fired out of a cannon following his funeral, plans for which have yet to be announced.

"I believe he wanted to be shot out of a cannon," friend Troy Hooper told AFP.

"I understand it's in his will," said Hooper, associate editor of the Aspen Daily News, based near the Colorado home where Thompson, 67, apparently shot himself on Sunday.

2. Then dammit, that's what should happen
and it should be televised. If they can show Raygun for 72 hours straight they can give Hunter a film clip.

Damn, can't find a cannon smilie.

3. My husband has told me that he wants his ashes to be spread out over
the ocean to provide food for the life living there. There are boats that one can hire to provide a suitable ceremony, complete with all the accolades, that will do this.

Not too long ago here, there was an elderly woman who was spotted climbing over the big slippery rocks on this rocky Maine coast with an urn in her hands. Her intent was to fling those ashes into the pounding surf. Some living in the area who saw her, also feared for her intent as it seemed behavior that was bizarre, and for her safety suspecting that she may also jump in after it, and called the sheriff and the rescue squad.

I felt sorry for her.

7. The ocean is a wonderful idea.

My younger brother passed on last March and my older brother called a few months ago to let me know that our little brother - he was 48 but still my little brother - is now surfing the beach at Torrey Pines for eternity. I've downloaded some pix of that beach and I have to say I can't think of too many nicer places for my brother's spirit to spend eternity. So Hunter Thompson should get his wish. Blast his ashes out that cannon and everybody have a shot of scotch or whatever poison you prefer to toast the Great Gonzo Journalist of All Time O8)

5. in the Criterion Edition of Fear & Loathing, one of the extras contains...
Edited on Tue Feb-22-05 08:21 PM by codegreen
a sequence about, if i recall, some monument of a giant fist that Hunter wanted built that would fire off with his ashes into space or something... i'd have to watch again and i don't have the time, but there's an interesting discussion about a strange, giant fist monument he wanted to construct.

somebody should get that project going.

(edit) okay, i made time to watch it.

the extra is called "Fear and Loathing on the Road to Hollywood" it was a BBC documentary filmed in 1978, years before Fear and Loathing the film was actually made.

the monument is to be on the Aspen property, be about 200+ feet tall; it is to be a fist that has two thumbs; one thumb coming out of each side of the hand; his ashes are to be shot out of the top of the fist somehow (i guess there's a hole between what is usually the middle and third fingers) and the ashes will spread down over the property as they fall from the sky. and that's supposed to be his funural, in the documentary.

he even says it's in the will. though, this was in 1978 so of course the will could have been changed since then.

9. Here's an idea
Have Hunter's ashes shot from a cannon aimed at the White House. I bet Hunter's ashes will find a way to strangle the little chimp.

11. Maybe Sarah Vowell's Dad could help out. On This American Life

She did a story about her dad, a Montana gunsmith building this cannon and that he wanted to be shot out of it when he died.

If you have never listened to the story it's one of her better ones and can be listened to here:
