Why do we let the new GOP claim words like "liberty" and "freedom"?
The new GOP is the party of the big, expensive, and intrusive state. Their major social policies all aim at rolling back freedoms. So why do we let them claim this rhetoric, every group putting "liberty" or "freedom," in its name, without pointing out how much nonsense that is?

1. They use them so much they almost don't mean anything
The way to win any argument it seems, is to scream "liberty" or "freedom" in your opponent's face, as is you're AGAINST liberty and freedom.

2. They have not claimed these words! GOP means less freedom,
less liberty. Unless you happen to be a corporation.

3. Freedom means economic & commercial freedom.
No taxes, no environmental rules, no labor laws, etc.

It's code.

5. We should challenge them to define "freedom".
Does "freedom" mean being subject to their "make-it-up-as-we-go-along" rules?

Does "freedom" mean being encumbered with supporting big corporate interests?

Does "freedom" mean having the feds "sneak and peak" into our personal lives?

Does "freedom" mean allowing one religion greater weight than any other?

Does "freedom" mean manipulating the naive or uninformed in order to advance the profits of the market wolves or political foxes?

Does "freedom" mean dying for a cause in which you have no belief or positive reward?

Does "freedom" mean NEVER SPEAKING YOUR THOUGHTS OR SHARING YOUR HEART FOR FEAR OF BEING ATTACKED?

WHAT "FREEDOM" ARE WE TALKING ABOUT?

Seriously.

I always thought true freedom required a dedication on behalf of the "powerful" to protect the voice of the "powerless".

Of course, the "freedom" I speak of,...was the human variety.

6. GOP doublespeak Freedom=Slavery
We have the freedom to breathe polluted air and drink polluted water. We have the freedom to work long hours for low pay with no benefits. We have the freedom to send our kids to under funded schools. GOP freedoms just never stop.

7. They sure know how to turn them into
dirty words. Janis Joplin had the right idea.."Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose"

And Gene Pitney's.."The man who shot Liberty Valance".

"Many a man would face his gun
and many a man would fall
The man who shot Liberty Valance
he shot Liberty Valance
he was the bravest of them all."

9. Same reason Dems wanna be nice and liked instead of saying
social security reform is really "destruction of social security"

privatization of SS is really "corporate theft of your money"

If bush worked for your business you would fire him for gross incompetence

republicans practice environmental rape

etc

10. Add "family" to that list
Edited on Wed Feb-23-05 10:31 PM by Pushed To The Left
Any time a group has the word "Family" in it's name, nine times out of ten it's a right-wing hate group. "Pro-family" is code word for "anti-gay" most of the time. If the right-wing is so pro-family, why are they trying to keep part of the population from getting married and adopting children?

If the right-wing supports "liberty", then why are they so against civil liberties? Why do they despise the American Civil LIBERTIES Union more than Osama Bin Laden? When they talk about freedom, they mean the freedom of the people in power and for corporations. It doesn't apply to the rest of us.
