Fear of self-fulfilling prophecies ?
The dollar is in a deep slide. Could it crash? George Bush is a Nazi? Could our nation turn fascist? Making threats to Iran? When will we bomb?

Do you ever worry that we may be emphasizing these types of stories too much and that they may become self-fulfilling prophecies?

1. We're simply observing what is going on...
It can't be self-fulfilling if we aren't the ones at the wheel.

2. fear of facing reality

The dollar *is* in a deep slide, the integrity of our
election process has been compromised, civil rights have been
seriously eroded by our legislators, our country unilateraly invaded another country under false pretenses, power is being consolidated by one party and that party is making every effort to pass laws to marginalize the opposition, the press must pander to the powers that be in order to obtain access...and so few people seem to care.

I had a co-worker tell me, "I don't see why you're so upset about the patriot act. It hasn't personally impacted YOU."

I think we're way more likely to see these prophecies (an economic crash, another war, the end of democracy) fufilled because so many people are apparently choosing to ignore "unpleasant" realities.

4. head in the sand is the worst thing for a fascist regime. As to the
economy - you don't want to create a panic but at the same time if you have to go through an economic correction - you go through it - you do not put it off with wars and delusions. Otherwise the 'correction' becomes much worse. (Actually the WAr may have helped ease the depression). When I talk about the economy I reiterate that they only ever expect a very low depression which is almost the same as very low inflation. Nothing more than two percent.

But you do not want to cause panic. You do not want to have eveyone living in a pubble.

Just be real. And with people beginning to talk about the economy more now - that is healthy. That people are aware a little and not getting a huge mortgage.
