6. I'm pretty certain it was actually the DLC who pushed him on Gore.
I'd have to drag out some links, though, and I'm on my lunch break at work. Maybe someone else can clear Gore's name in my stead!

45. I do not like LIEberman, he is a traitor to the
Democratic party. I'm half-Jewish, but that doesn't mean I support LIEberman now (of course I voted for him for VP in 2000, but that was then). I wish we could think of a way to boot him out of the party if he keeps going Bushlite. I don't think he is a Jewish role model because he so much supports the Anti-Semitic Dubya.

9. Ah, but there's a difference.
Edited on Fri Feb-25-05 10:57 PM by Zhade
The CfG targets those who won't tow the party line in favor of reducing personal freedoms and waging illegal imperialist wars.

We're giving money to unseat Lieberman because he WILL tow the party line on those things - the REPUBLICAN party line.

World of difference.

EDIT: Alternative? No clue, I don't live there. But if a viable one is found, I'll contribute to unseat Lieberman.

32. No, he is exactly right, it is a liberal version of the CFG
We believe what we are doing is right, they believe what they are doing is right. The only REAL difference is that they have 55 Senate seats and we have 45. They can afford to play games like this, we can't.

25. You're damned skippy!!!!
Priorities indeed. We need to focus on the few senate seats we can win and on helping any Dem who has a shot at the House.

As an example, Chris Smith in the NJ 4th is one Right-to-Lifer who is on the ropes. He pissed of DeLay and his own party took away his Veterans Committee chairmanship.

Lieberman may suck, but he's a wish list item, not a priority.

33. Funny thing that man-on-dog said related to this thread
I saw man-on-dog on C-Span the other night, talking to some religious conservative group. Somebody asked him why we supported the re-election of Arlen Specter over Pat Toomey. He responded by saying that the NRSC chose a strategy that kept Arlen Specter because he had a safe seat. He said that the NRSC strategy worked because the GOP has 55 Senate seats and the more Republicans in the Senate, the easier it is to pass their agenda. This is the ONE time that I will ever say this but, I agree with man-on-dog 100%.

Likewise, this applies to us. The more Democrats we have, the better we will be able to thwart the Bush agenda, ESPECIALLY if we have a majority. So let's take Santorum's advice and start unseating as many Republicans as possible, starting with him.

unless whoever is running against him is able to show they actually have a chance at beating him i might. but so far Lieberman is pretty much a safe seat as is Dianne Feinstein in California and others who are unpopular on DU.

but my time, money etc will be on beating the Republicans.

23. Why would I donate money to unseat a progressive?
Despite the wailing and gnashing of teeth here at DU, Joe Lieberman has a great progressive record on a whole host of issues. It's quite obvious that people dislike his hawkish foreign-policy and defense stances, but many Democrats ARE hawkish.

Not one thin dime from me.

28. tell the older Jewish people in Florida that SS is dying thanks to JOE...
Lieberman really promoted himself to that demographic in 2000 and won huge support of the Jewish people.......as do dems in general....so if he is gonna kill social security, he might lose the support of that group.

of course this strategy applies to people of all....or NO...religious views.

The Senate operates at largely the will of the majority leadership. As far as I'm concerned, 51 matters more than unseating holy Joe, especially when the GOP controls the ENTIRE government.

35. Replacing him with a newcomer requires the DSCC to spend money...
Edited on Sat Feb-26-05 04:07 PM by Hippo_Tron
On that newcomer's campign. Blue state or not it still could be a competative seat, especially considering that CT has a Republican governor. We need as many safe seats as possible so that we can focus our resources where they will be most effective. Not to mention that I think any dollar you give to unseating him would be much better spent given to a Democrat running in the general election. However, if we get 51 Senate seats in 2006 AND replace Joe with a more progressive democrat, then I would be wrong.

I will admit, that there would be an exception to this. I think that if a once in a generation politician, like the one that I display in my avatar, challenged Joe, then I would support him. However, if it's just another rank-and-file, who happens to be more liberal than Joe, then I would rather see the money spent elsewhere.
