New Maine House Bill Would Protect Fetuses Carrying the ‘Gay Gene’

Rep. Brian Duprey (R-Hampden) has submitted a bill to the State Legislature to shield potentially homosexual fetuses from discrimination. LD 908, “An Act to Protect Homosexuals from Discrimination,” attempts to protect homosexuals from death because they might carry the gene that could lead to homosexuality.

This bill as drafted would make it a crime to abort an unborn child if that child is determined to be carrying the “homosexual gene.” Duprey said that no such genetic marker has yet been discovered. But considering rapid advancements in genetic mapping research, he wants legislation in place should such a breakthrough occur. “If the homosexual gene is ever determined to exist,” he said, “I want to ensure that a woman could not abort an unborn child simply because that child is determined to be carrying this gene.”

Duprey received the idea for this bill when listening to the Rush Limbaugh radio show. “I heard Rush saying that the day the ‘gay gene’ is determined to be real, that overnight gays would become pro-life,” Duprey said.

“Most people would agree that to kill someone just because that person might be gay would constitute a hate crime,” said Duprey. “I have heard from women who told me that if they found out that they were carrying a child with the gay gene, then they would abort. I think this is wrong. Those unborn children should be protected.”

1. What if I want to abort my child because it's straight?
Come on. We can see right through this. Ridiculous.

3. Could the plan be THAT cynical? "Choose: gay rights or abortion rights?"
Edited on Sat Feb-26-05 02:39 PM by IanDB1
Is that really the plan?

"If you want to protect gay people, you also have to vote for more limits on a woman's right to choose."

Then, after it becomes illegal to abort "a gay fetus," then what's next? A law against aborting a fetus with Down's Syndrome? A law against "selective reduction" of fetuses that result from fertility drugs?

Am I just being paranoid, or is that really the plan?

On the other hand, I would be in favor of a law against sterilizing carriers of "gay genes," but not one against aborting "gay fetuses." (Can you tell they're gay because they dance in the womb?)

On edit:

"Duprey received the idea for this bill when listening to the Rush Limbaugh radio show. “I heard Rush saying that the day the ‘gay gene’ is determined to be real, that overnight gays would become pro-life,” Duprey said."

No, I wasn't being paranoid. That really IS the plan.

5. I really think it is. It's supposed to be a wedge issue to drive gays
to the Republican side.

And if it DOES pass, is that a slippery slope? You bet your ass it is ("Don't fetuses with a predisposition to cowlicks deserve the same protection as gays?" etc. etc.).

4. Will a pro-lifer abort a fetus because it carried a "gay" gene?
I know Alan Keyes would! I also know that some fundies would murder their children if they turn out gay.

6. Actually, a "gay gene" in vitro test could create a tremendous opportunity
You could create a test that gives a whole lot of false-positives, and then you'd have anti-gay fundies aborting fetuses left and right, afraid their babies would be gay. That might actually make a dent in the fundamentalist community.

I'm being ironic, of course. I'm not a big fan of abortion, actually.
