"President Mitt"? He's running hard.
Mitt Romney is really digging for the "government belongs in the bedroom, not the boardroom" crowd!

http://www.boston.com/news/local/articles/2005/02/26/gay_families_protest_romney_comments/

-- Speaking before an adoring audience of Utah Republicans last night, Governor Mitt Romney drew a link between America's prestige around the world and the legalization of same-sex marriages in Massachusetts.

"America cannot continue to lead the family of nations around the world if we suffer the collapse of the family here at home," Romney said, calling the Supreme Judicial Court's legalization of same-sex marriage in Massachusetts "a blow to the family."

Hours after gay marriage supporters in Boston criticized him for his recent, strident criticism of same-sex marriage, Romney delivered a half-hour speech laced with references to religion, family values, and praise for Ronald Reagan's foreign policy. In the latest in his recent series of out-of-state political appearances, he smiled as Utah Republicans made fun of Massachusetts' liberal reputation in their introductory remarks.

1. Let him waste his money. It's in the bag for Jeb, anyway.
The fix is in for Jeb.

11. You're wrong about Jeb. By 2007 voters will be very tired of the
name Bush! I really doubt Jeb would even run, but if he did, and won the primary, he'd loose the election.

THe Diebold fix is in, and if you live in Georgia, you know all about that!

do a better job. and there's no way in hell, w. would defer to or give any respect to his little brother.

3. What a perfect shower of shit!
Marriage is suffering because of the straights who demean the institution with divorce, infidelity, serial monogamy, one-day marriages, and a host of other things with NOTHING TO DO WITH GAY MARRIAGE! The man is either profoundly stupid or cynical beyond belief--probably both. I HATE REPUBLICANS!!!!!

Mormons excommunicate gays/lesbians. Mormons also vote over 98% GOP.

8. He's actually traveling to early primary states
this past week, saying pretty much the same things. He is apparently outraged that some homosexual couples are actually "Having children born to them".

Suggestions are that he will find an excuse to break his vow to run for re-election as governor, 'cause he finds it boring anyway. He can then run full time for president without being accused of openly neglecting the Commonwealth, like he accused John Kerry of doing.

5. Does anyone really think Mormonism will withstand the scrutiny?
Considering their progressive views on blacks--whom they excluded from the priesthood until 1978--and the current Mormon "fringe" that still practices polygamy, I really wonder how Mitt is going to position himself as a moderate candidate.

7. I heard that some redneck types consider mormonism to be a cult
I think that it will definately be a disadvantage when you are trying to appeal largely to a bigoted constituency.

10. I'm not trying to promote stereotypes, so don't get me wrong
But after having read "Under the Banner of Heaven" by John Krakauer, I really scratch my head at what Mormons believe. There's a lot of really, really bizarre stuff, IMHO.

It doesn't accurately reflect what Mormons believe. You can sell more books if you make something sound bizarre and sensational.

21. Not just a few rednecks believe that
The Southern Baptists, Pentecostals, conservative Lutherans and most of the conservative protestant evangelical Christian movement teach their members that Mormonism is a strange cult. They are told some really outrageous lies in the name of learning about other religions and "warning" people about Mormons. The popular anti-Mormon hate literature used by these churches to "educate" their members is only one slight step up from KKK brochures.

I have a very hard time believing that movement would support any Mormon in the GOP Presidential primary. Many of them don't even consider Mormons to be Christians. That's one reason Orrin Hatch had a very hard time running for President in 2000. When he spoke to the Christian coalition he had to make some comments about his faith in Jesus to convince them he was a real Christian.

12. Is Mitt a Mormon?
I have met some decent people who were Mormon, but I quickly learned not to discuss religion or any kind of faith with them.

If he's a Mormon, I wouldn't expect him to say anything different to his fellow members in Utah that what he did.

I also would think, his positions would be so far RW he could never win a primary, let alone an election.

13. I remember when his dad wanted to be President
Edited on Sat Feb-26-05 10:59 PM by Jack Rabbit
George Romney, then Governor of Michigan, was the hope of the liberal Republicans in first part of the 1968 campaign. He ran with Governor Rockefeller's blessing. For those too young to remember, liberal Republican was not an oxymoron in those days and Nelson Rockefeller was the leader of that wing of the GOP.

Anyway, he fell flat on his face as a candidate after he criticized the Vietnam War. At first he supported continuing the war effort, but then backtracked and said he had been "brainwashed." Even opponents of the war were unimpressed. Romney's downfall gave Nixon a clear field.

14. Yes, Romney is a big time Mormon
Edited on Sat Feb-26-05 10:51 PM by Erika
He has ties to Salt Lake because he was brought in to straighten up the mess of the bribery of the Salt Lake Olympics. Utah Mormom public officials were found guilty of bribing Olympic officials by pledging the $ to pay for the college education of the children of the Olympic Committee.

Mormons do believe they can die and become Gods of their own planets. My biggest turn off is they believe that the husband must "call" their wife up to heaven or she can't go. It turns the women into immediate subjects of the man.

18. Isn't Mitt pro-choice?
I was under the impression that Romney was pro-choice. If he is, that basically disqualifies him from the Republican nomination. Jeb has stated emphatically that he will not run in 2008, going so far as to say "read my lips." It's the dynasty thing--he has to let time elapse before his run, just like W did to give Americans some breathing room between the Bushes.

26. Actually I think Romney has a "nuanced" position on abortion
I just googled Romney, and his position on abortion is: personally, he says he is pro-life, but as a governor, he protects the right for a woman to choose. He arrived at this position after a death of a family member from an illegal abortion in 1994. Since as a politician he is pro-choice, that pretty much eliminates him from Republican nomination.

19. If we had President Romney and Leader Reid, Mormons would
be running the entire government. I already hear that a lot of FBI and CIA agents are Mormon. Interesting... :)

I can only imagine the level of hate and venom that will be directed at Mormons on DU if Romney is the GOP nominee. That religion is already highly misunderstood and persecuted often enough.

27. Mitt will lose his reelection for governor in 06
Edited on Sun Feb-27-05 11:13 PM by MakeItSo
I live in Massachusetts. The likely Democratic nominee, AG Tom O'Reilly, is a formidable candidate and is out-polling Romney at the present time.

People in Massachusetts are becoming increasingly aware that Romney isn't a Massachusetts kind of guy and can't even bother (or isn't able) to fake it.

My prediction: Romney will lose badly in '06. Mitt, go back to Utah or wherever you came from.

28. A clarification
Mormons DO NOT practice polygamy anymore. It is not practiced in their religion. I have several friends who are Mormon and they are really nice people (they were always the designated drivers because they do not drink alcohol). Mitt does not have a chance in hell of winning the republican nomination in 08.

With him speaking at the gop convention he is toast given that someone decent opposes him. He & Pataki will be gone after election in 06.
