An anecdote from my sister about a Republican supporter.

My sister is an in-home caregiver in Montana. One of her charges is an 80 year-old woman who is a confirmed Republican. She thinks FDR was the greatest president ever, but she doesn't like the Democrats. I asked my sister about this, since I assume FDR=Dems. Apparently, this woman just hates Blacks, Jews and homosexuals, so that's her basis for being a Republican. Anyway, now she has decided that Bush is evil, and it's all because of Social Security. This one act is so threatening in the real world that it has trumped all that other crap. Here's to Republican hubris.

8. I wonder if rove, et al

isn't worried about an 80 year old. He's looking to pick up 20 somethings who seem to be more receptive to private accounts. The 80 year old probably won't be around much longer. Those 20 year olds will be, & the repugs can say "see, we want to let you control your own future". One of two things happen; SS is never privatized & repugs can use it like they use abortion; create a wedge, or SS is privatized & in the 20 or 30 years it takes to show the country what a load of crap it is, the 20's are already confirmed repugs.
