sign this petition instead.

The global AIDS emergency demands urgent action and real resources. AIDS is one of the most pressing moral issues of our time. The disease is ravaging the African continent and leaving a devastating legacy for survivors. Everyday, some 6,500 people die from AIDS in Africa, leaving behind a generation of orphans.

For 2005, Congress has allocated $2.7 billion for the fight against AIDS, or just 0.1% of the total U.S. budget. To put this in perspective, U.S. spending on AIDS next year will equal just 5% of annual U.S. spending on national defense. But there is broad-based support to expand funding, with 86% of Americans recently polled saying a multilateral effort to fight AIDS and extreme poverty should be a priority during the next presidential term.

We believe America can and should do more to fight global AIDS and call on the U.S. to commit 1% of the federal budget to combat this devastating disease. It would make a huge difference to kids who are suffering. It would make our country more secure.

By committing 1% of the U.S. budget to the AIDS epidemic we can:

* Help prevent 10 million children from becoming AIDS orphans.
* Help get 104 million children into school in the poorest countries.
* Help prevent 3.5 million children from dying of unsafe drinking water.

It represents a sensible way for America to use its economic power to deal with poverty, injustice and the global epidemic of AIDS.

Dear President Bush:

This is a time of enormous need as well as great hope. We ask that you commit to beginning your new term as president by entering into an historic pact for compassion and justice to help the poorest people in the world fight the emergency of AIDS and the poverty in which it thrives.

We ask that you support targeting one percent of the U.S. budget towards providing basic needs – education, health, clean water, food and care for AIDS orphans – to transform the futures and hopes of an entire generation in the poorest countries.

We believe this request is in the best American tradition of helping others help themselves. We believe it enhance U.S. security by making the world a better, safer place.

Thank you for making a commitment to this issue.
