The Legislature has passed a new disclosure law as a result of the vile tactics of the so-called Christian Coalition in an election to fill a vacant state Senate seat in which blatantly false gay-baiting smears were employed.
Send Mrs. Dolbare an email if you can and thank her for her courage in standin up to these political terrorists: gloriadolbare@bellsouth.net
http://www.aladems.net/nucleus/index.php?itemid=101Democratic Legislators in the state Senate stepped up to the plate and hit a home run yesteray. The Senate passed a bill, similar to the one that passed in the House by a vote of 87-13 a couple of weeks ago, that would require any organization to disclose its donors if it spends more than $1,000 running ads to influence the outcome of an election for public office or for a referendum. The Senate passed the legislation soundly 30-1 with only one no vote. Sen. Hank Erwin was the lone Republican voting against the disclosure bill.
The legislation was passed after Mrs. Gloria Dolbare gave an emotional plea for action. Other Democratic Senators railed against the tactics used against her in her campaign for her late husband's House seat. Sen. Pat Lindsey said,
"These self-anointed Christians who propose the display of the Ten Commandments don't care much about the one that says thou shalt not bear false witness."Some redemption came of course with the overwhelming vote, and an apology by Sen. Hap Myers, who said, "There are quite a few of us in the Republican Party ashamed of that ad." However, that leaves "quite a few" in the Republican Party who aren't ashamed and continue to condone this type of immoral campaigning.
Mrs. Dolbare's appeal to the Legislature is here:
http://www.aladems.net/dolbare.htmSenators, in the final days of the special election, my republican opponent, the Christian Coalition and the Alabama Republican Legislative Committee, and members of the republican party, attacked me in the most vile and personal manner. The last Friday before the election on Tuesday, the people in my district received some horrible, horrible literature. Fliers that said, although God made Adam and Eve, Gloria wants you to meet Adam and Steve. This false statement was made because I had not responded to the Christian Coalition information. I had not seen the information; therefore, how could I have responded? Why didn’t they attempt to question me by phone?
I had run a clean campaign, focusing only on the issues, not trying to assassinate my opponent’s characters. Friends and people who knew me well, called and wanted to know if the fliers were true. I couldn’t believe what was happening. I reassured them and told them that my life had been an example of what I believed. I had questions.
How could these people who call themselves Christians attack another Christian? How could the leaders of the republican party, who base their platforms on having high morals, use such sleazy tactics to steal this house seat?
