Kerry picks up endorsement from sizable Michigan union
U.S. Sen. John Kerry received a major piece of the Michigan labor pie that went up for grabs when U.S. Rep. Dick Gephardt dropped out of the race to become the Democratic presidential nominee. One of the state’s largest union locals, United Food and Commercial Workers Local 951, announced Thursday that it was endorsing Kerry’s candidacy. The UFCW had backed Gephardt nationally. The local said it was backing the Massachusetts senator because of his long political experience and “his commitment to generate jobs in Michigan.”

“Sen. John Kerry will not only target issues important to UFCW Local 951, but will also support working families across the state of Michigan and throughout the nation,” president Robert Potter, who met with Kerry in September, said in a statement. “UFCW Local 951 stands behind Kerry’s position on tax policy and foreign affairs, which will ultimately help revive the U.S. economy.” Local 951 represents more than 34,000 workers in Michigan’s grocery and retail sectors.

Before Gephardt quit the race after coming in fourth in the Iowa caucuses, Michigan’s unions were lining up behind him and Howard Dean. But the state’s biggest labor prize, the United Auto Workers, which has 250,000 members and 100,000 retirees in Michigan, has not endorsed anybody.
