I finally got a good look at the infamous clip and
from my view it's a whole lot about nothing, the proverbial tempest in a teapot. I mean the way he kept grinning -- he didn't look angry. He seemed revved up, having a good time. The LA Times ran his whole speech and it reads as a darn good speech. I saw Jesse Ventura on MSNBC -- and he even said it was more about the media than Howard. He said he figured the media created Dean and is now trying to take him down. He figured most people aren't paying that much attention.

I hope Dean gets himself on the late night shows and news programs and has some fun with it -- he should parody himself and laugh at himself, like Clinton did regarding his long winded speech at the Dem convention. It would help humanize him.

I saw Dean on CSPAN today -- and I thought he was fantastic. The town meeting really is his format. I now feel stronger about him as the best candidate -- I even sent him some more money.

4. Great -- Do we have any comedy writers among us
Maybe we can write something fun for him. I can see him coming on stage with a mike 'parodying' himself in Iowa. Maybe a joke about naming all the states. And then saying something about not meaning to scare people -- he meant to scare just one person -- and that's the Bushit in the WH. He should be scared because I'm going to take his job.

I don't know -- he could definitely turn this whole 'incident' into something really positive.

18. A few ideas.
Edited on Thu Jan-22-04 07:17 PM by robsul82
Open with a typical, calm speech. A heckler bursts in. Starts yelling things at Dean. Dean smiles, remains calm. More from the heckler. Smiles, remains calm. Insults him. Smiles, remains calm. Insults his family. Dean suddenly turns to the guy and says, "Don't get me angry...you wouldn't LIKE me when I'm angry!" Do some Incredible Hulk stuff with him after that.

Instead of naming states, recite the alphabet.

"A! B! C! D!" Etc.

Sing a song while playing his guitar, and punctuate every line with "YEARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!"

i.e. - "I'm a presidential nominee, lost a big ol' lead to a man named Kerry/YEARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!/That makes me angry, ain't gonna lie/YEARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!"

Do the Top 10 List, and number one (for any or no reason at all) is "YEARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!"

Later.

23. Interesting.
I was watching Dave last night and he was going all out on naming the states, ala Dean. My first thought was that Dean needs to do his show.

Thanks for the heads up.

3. I agree
It's the media creating a media frenzy. I think Dean was just wanting to get his troops fired up and ready to get back to work. Didn't bother me in the slightest.

8. Totally blown out of proportion
While I expected the media and right-wing to try to play this stuff up seeing fellow Dems do their dirty work is very disturbing.

But the Dems have been very disturbing to me for awhile now.

"But the Dems have been very disturbing to me for awhile now."

Been voting Dem since 1974, Jerry Brown Gov. of CA.

Been watching politics since 1968.

Life long Dem, but baby... Lately, I'm amazed. And saddened.

11. Just emailed the Dean campaign urging them to have fun with
the angry speech and to definitely not get defensive. Hope they listen.

I keep thinking of things he could say, after he has fun with it -- like, you bet I'm mad. I'm mad about a president who sends young men and women to die and kill in an immoral and illegal war. I'm mad about a president who has lost 3 million jobs, who gives away the store to big corporate cronies. Yeah, I'm mad about a president who is usurping our civil liberties, one who uses fear and anxiety to seize more power every day. etc.

12. most overblown story yet
I like to criticize Dean for the many, many legitimate things to criticize him about. Hamming it up at a pep rally is not a legitimate issue to criticize him about.

16. Agreed
I saw the clip, and I wondered if I'd seen the right one. Surely, this is not what my repected peers on DU are going on and on about. I like Dean more and more every day.

His record is fairly conservative and his platform is fairly liberal. In both cases this was because he was listening to the people. Howard Dean spoke out when few others did. It wasn't hard to do, most of us were screaming about how we felt the Democrats in gerneral were not standing up to * enough. Howard Dean heard us, and spoke for us when few others would. That in a nutshell is Howard Dean, one of the few politicians who doesn't claim to be smarter than the rest of us. He listens and represents us. This is backed up in his campaign by record grassroots effort and small contributions. That means that Howard can keep listening to us, he doesn't have to wear special corporate ear plugs. This is a huge step in the right direction.

If you don't support Howard, who is your candidate listening to?

The speed, the power and the might demonstrated in the takedown of Howard Dean by the media is an awesome thing to behold.

It shouldn't happen to ANY of our candidates, and yet it's going to.

What annoys me most is when it does, there's some groups of partisan democrats, particularly at DU, that will celebrate.

That's really disheartening.

But it sure ain't going over well.

fired up our home....you know like the rallying cay..:Remember the Alamo...and the John Paul Jones quote: "I have not yet begun to fight" think the media would have dragged those statements down if they were in that era?....
Good for Dean....I love that fighting spirit and Never will I turn my back on my man when the media rips him to shreds....Bravo ....

28. What in the hell is wrong with a pep speech???
Good God. This is such utter bull****. I don't ever, ever want to hear the term "liberal media" again!

In 2000, * called NYT reporter Adam Clymer a "major league asshole" into an open mike, before the prerss and a crowd, his VP candidate chimed in with, "yeah, big time." How damn "presidential" was that??? Where was the media on that one?

I'm sick and tired of the media giving pass after pass to the right wing, then slamming and asking the "when did you stop beating your wife"-type questions of Democrats.

Jeez, all this motivated me to contribute (again) to the Dean campaign.
