Is this on in different times for different timezones? It's starting here in Indiana right now on ABC.

79. I loved it when he turned to her and asked
do you feel exploited, dear? I just went ahhh. She was much more attractive than I thought based on the frumpy pictures the media has shown of her. I liked him even more for the way he respects her career and person. But I admit, I yelled at Diane Sawyer. She was really playing 'gotcha' tonight. Go Dr. Dean!!

I think Judy is cute, but she isn't polished. I'm afraid that the times might not be right for many things. A Black President, a woman President, or a First Lady who is her own person.

She's Elvish though. That's a plus with the Lord of the Rings voters. ;-)

Judy is very endearing and Howard is coming off very calm and reasonable.

He was very honest with the "Was that Presidential?" question and that went over very well with me.

11. Dean's doing well
At least in the first portion of the interview he's coming across reasonably well.

He's answered all Diane Sawyers questions about as well as he could have, but I still think this is something that Dean can't talk his way out of.

People are either going to think it's no big deal, or they're gonna be severely turned off by it. By next week we'll know.

1) The Q&A session at that opera house in N.H.

2) The debate

3) Prime Time

Thanks for reminding me about Letterman - I had forgotten and the local listing just mentions Matthew Broderick and some NASA scientist.

I was going to go but it started after 9am and I had to be to work by 11am. There's not much parking in Lebanon, and I knew it would be impossible for me to get to work on time if I went. The interview was done in Norwich, VT. Both Lebanon, NH and Norwich, VT are about 15 minutes from where I live.

55. No, I didn't see the Q & A yet, but I knew he'd be great
The harder things get for Dean the more he'll amaze people at how much he can overcome. He had to deliver excellence today, he knew it and he delivered. He's very, very dependable in this way. I caught the last half of the debate. My son's band concert was tonight and I had to miss some of the debate. Was the Q & A on CSpan? If so, it will replay late night tonight, and I usually watch what I've missed then. Dean really shines in the Town Hall type of set up. He's at his best in those. His voice sounds absolutely awful, though. It's been raspy since Iowa.

34. Watching Diane asking "gotcha" questions
and she started off the show by incorrectly referring to Judy as Judy Steinberg-Dean, when Judy clearly said her name is Judy Dean and she uses Dr. Steinberg at work. Also, they have used how many excuses to show the Iowa speech? What scum they are.

But on a positive note, Howard and Judy came off great. They looked humble and normal. And by showing that speech over and over again, you can tell there is nothing there. I think this interview was a big plus for Dean, especially following his great performance in the debate tonight.

37. Interview was a home run!
The American people got to see the real Dean and his very real wife. These people have no pretenses - they are what is called "salt of the earth". What you see is what you get. No phonies, nothing slick or canned. I think Governor Dean is the real deal. You may not like his style but you have to respect his heart and his integrity.

Personally, I find him to be a real breath of fresh air when compared to the other major candidates.

P.S. My wife who knew nothing of Dean watched the interview. Her reaction was a very simple: "Now this is a guy that I can relate to. He is one of us".

41. Diane Sawyer makes me sick...
Let me start off by saying Dean isn't my number one pick....But that interview should make ALL democrats angry. It was an attempt at character assasination, nothing less.

The same whore media that allowed Bush to spout off lie after lie during '00, is quite reliably in the GOP's pocket this coming election as well. ABC should have just had a "vote Bush 2004" thing in the right hand corner instead of "Vote 2004".

For God's sake, why the hell does it matter that Judith Dean doesn't campaign with his husband? She's not running for president...Then again maybe the idea of an independent woman practicing a professional career intimidates republicans. Woman are fit for being grandmas (and shitty bitchy ones at that) and librarians.

And what the hell were they trying to portray Dean as? Some sort of wife beater? How often does he lose his temper? This was absolutely ridiculous.

F*(^ the corporate right wing media!

43. They hit a homerun
This was a phenomenal interview. WMUR (local NH ABC affiliate) ran the debate a little later than the FOX station. Immediately after the WMUR airing of the debate was the interview. Most people who plan on voting in the NH primary were likely watching the debate, and saw the interview. This is going to be GREAT for the Dean campaign. I loved the comment Dean made about giving his all to all those people who gave their all for him. No one can question who Dean will be loyal to as president...it will be the people, just as it was during his governorship here in Vermont.

"I watched my son at a hockey game and when he scored I stood up and said, 'YEEAAAHHH!' Was that presidential? Probably not, but I'm not going to stop being a father and a husband." Kick ass! KICK!

Howard and Judy: my kinda people. No cable TV, ride bikes, have independent careers. However, I live in Georgia, where that's conisdered oddball. The Repugs down here believe women are Hooters waitresses or Barabara Bush. I don't know if the Dean's "granola" lifestyle will go over. I also agree the, "Yeah, I do some nutty things line," is one bad soundbyte waiting to happen.

But sue me, I like `em.

61. Dean did well
Edited on Thu Jan-22-04 11:13 PM by economic justice
I'm not a Dean supporter and am onboard with Clark, but I think Dean and his wife, Judy, did very well on Primetime Live. Back to the campaign! I think it was all a huge mistake on his and his aides part, but I think it should be history now and let's move on to New Hampshire. Dean hit the three pointer tonight.

edit to correct error.

71. She makes him look good
It's really a shame she doesn't do this sort of thing with him more. Just sitting with her he seemed more vunerable, sensitive, cute. He even blushed, for chrissakes, heh.

The Dean's did well for themselves in the interview.

78. Sometimes honesty just works...
Judy's staying home for her patients and Paul. As a side benefit, her rare appearances have caused a stir, bringing yet another reason for the media to focus on Dean.

You have to love it when good things happen :)

73. We Dems are graced with an embarrassment of riches...
in prospective first ladies.

And Dr. Judy was incredibly genuine and adorable. I loved it when she said "I'm just not into... things".

74. She is a great asset !
She may have saved his butt tonight. She comes across as an honest, humanitarian, non-materialistic, good person. An Eleanor Rooosevelt- type that would actually push for and get national health care. Oh, she isa doctor, isn't she?

77. That interview rocked!
They were both so frickin' "on," so genuine, so eloquent, so human. It was beautiful. This is why I got behind this guy in the first place. A frickin' breath of fresh air. Perfect? Hell no. But the great thing is he doesn't pretend to be!

81. Anybody notice...
in the promo for the show Sawyer asks Mrs. Dean "Does he have a temper?" or words to that affect. Then the camera moves from Sawyer to the Deans and shows Mrs. Dean pausing, smiling sheepishly and looking to her husband. BUT, during the actual interview, Mrs. Dean's response to that question is an immediate and unequivocal 'no'. It seemed the promo was doctored (no pun) to infer that the Dean's would be less than forthcoming in the interview and might in fact have something to hide. Did I imagine this or did someone else see the same thing and draw similar conclusions?

82. No, I think they intended that as a "teaser"
Then, people would think there was some embarrassing anecdote about to come up.

83. teaser
Teaser or not, surely the sequence of questions/responses was altered, thus changing the truth of the exchange. Certainly, anyone viewing the promo could have been misled to believe that Mrs. Dean might vacillate or worse over the question. She did not. If one did not stay tuned and watch the interview, they risk forming an opinion of Howard Dean based upon a deliberate alteration of the truth.
