Bush should answer the charge of being AWOL! read....
ONE YEAR GAP IN BUSH'S GUARD DUTY
NO RECORD OF AIRMAN AT DRILLS FROM 1972-73

By Walter V. Robinson, Boston Globe Staff, 5/23/2000

AUSTIN, Texas - After George W. Bush became governor in 1995, the Houston Air National Guard unit he had served with during the Vietnam War years honored him for his work, noting that he flew an F-102 fighter-interceptor until his discharge in October 1973.

And Bush himself, in his 1999 autobiography, ''A Charge to Keep,'' recounts the thrills of his pilot training, which he completed in June 1970. ''I continued flying with my unit for the next several years,'' the governor wrote.

But both accounts are contradicted by copies of Bush's military records, obtained by the Globe.

2. Clark doesn't give a crap either
he said so himself tonight during the debate.

But even though Clark doesn't seem to think checking up on *'s military record is important, I do. I wonder why a decorated military man doesn't mind letting another go AWOL while claiming he actually served?

4. Clark is playing this just right
If he jumps on it right now, he'll be accused of demagoguing the issue. The important thing is that the issue gets out into the discussion and that is happening. By not seeming to push it, Clark is allowing the issue to fester, but remains above the fray. There'll be plenty of time for him to get in the middle of it, if necessary. In the meantime, it's out there, it was actually brought up in a debate and eventually, Bush will have to be asked about it. And no one will be able to accuse Clark of trying to smear Bush.

Bush and the White House perfected this technique of "The last thing I would ever do is accuse Bill Clinton of XYZ." Remember the White House "vandalism" story? Whenever asked about it, Fleischer claimed that Bush was not going to make allegations, setting a new tone, blah blah blah. But implicit in that was that vandalism had occurred and the press kept talking about it.

That's just what's happening here. So I wouldn't dump on Clark. He's doing it just right. It's the smart move.
