Detroit News: Kerry talks tough, Dean tame in debate
MANCHESTER, N.H. — In the final debate before a crucial showdown in Tuesday’s New Hampshire primary, the top Democratic presidential contenders sparred over war and domestic issues but did little to change the dynamics of their fight for their party’s nomination.
The new and old front-runners — John Kerry and Howard Dean — took different tacks. Kerry tried to convince viewers in the nationally televised debate he was tough enough to be their commander in chief. Dean tried to convince New Hampshire voters he was not too angry or unstable to be their president.
In Thursday night’s debate at St. Anselm College, Kerry did best when asked how he would engage President George W. Bush in a debate on values.
