... Jebby in 2012. Let the Democrats have 2008, and then hammer them relentlessly for not fixing the problems created by eight years of Dubya's ineptitude, whine about them raising taxes (being tax and spend Democrats) when Republicans cut taxes and had a "good economy," etc.

And, because things will be desperately bad by that time, precisely because of what is being done now, the people will respond to the message that the Democrats are inept and ruined the economy. Nice game plan.

Unless it all goes to hell on Dubya's watch in a way that people won't forget for decades to come....

7. Jeb will run and be nominated in 2008

I don't give a damn about all the Frist talk. And they'll never nominate McCain. The GOP has its act together in regard to isolating the proper nominees for federal positions, much better than we do currently.

There is no way they'll let 2008 slide without nominating Jeb. He is worth at least 4-5 points in Florida, and that virtually locks up one of the 3 most vital states. You stick a Frist on top of the ticket and suddenly Florida is only a 1 to 2 point Republican edge, if the nation is 50/50. With Jeb they'll get the standard huge bounce in Florida since no one from that state has been on the ticket recently, if ever. Gore didn't get the standard Tennessee bump in 2000 because of electoral blase, since he was also on the ticket in '92 and '96. We inadvertently gave Jeb a full boost in the future by not nominating Bob Graham for VP in 2000 or 2004. That would have lessened Jeb's Florida bounce by a couple points.

... we'll just have to wait and see. I certainly thought, too, at one time, that the `pugs would immediately try to ram yet another Bush down our throats, but, I'm not so sure now.

One more reason is that Bush has to step down from the governorship in 2006. He won't be running, and if the Dems do happen to win that seat in Florida, a lot of the insider crap he's been up to will come out--just in time for 2008 election. By 2012, most of the crap will have blown over.

Then, there's the very obvious charges to be made of the Bushes trying to make a dynasty of the central government--which would carry a lot more weight if another Bush determined to seek the Presidency just as the last one was leaving.

Leaving a four-year gap allows them to run Jebbie as a white knight, coming in to save the country from the damage the Democrats did--much in the same way that Dubya was packaged--remember that Bush ran principally on the theme of restoring dignity and honor to the office. Dubya ran as a white knight, too.

But, we'll just have to wait and see. Jeb may be too hot and horny for the office to wait, but, right now, my guess is that he'll wait four more years, build money and connections for a run in 2012. He's only 51 now, I think (eight years younger than Dubya), so he'd be 58 in 2012, a prime age to complete an eight-year term without major health problems.

14. I just think 2008 makes too much sense for Jeb to pass on a run

The GOP will have held the White House for 8 years. That's not a disadvantegous position. It's neutral territory. One-party fatigue has not completely taken over at that point, like it does after 12 years. That's what Bush Sr. faced in 1992.

I think Jeb benefits from leaving office after 2006, regardless of how the Florida gov and senate races unfold that year. He can feign to distance himself from his brother and political decisionmaking for a while, then announce sometime during late 2007. You know darn well he can take advantage of GW's connections and staff from 2000 and 2004, and therefore money raising will be a cinch.

Remember, Jeb would probably have been the GOP nominee in 2000 if the '94 gov races in Florida and Texas had unfolded as predicted. Jeb was favored to defeat Lawton Chiles while Ann Richards was supposed to dismiss GW. Only a reversal of that propelled GW toward the 2000 bid.

Mostly, as I mentioned in my previous post, I think the Florida factor will be the trump card in Jeb running and the GOP making sure he's the nominee. If you look at historical results a favorite son has a clear advantage, in regard to how that state votes in comparison to its typical partisanship. Nominating Jeb automatically "buys" a bonus 3-5 net points in Florida for the GOP, something we simply can't overcome. That practically forces us to win both Ohio and Pennsylvania, or some unlikely combination of sweeping the swing midlevel states. Rove and Co. can do the math as well or better than I can. Jeb simply places them in the catbird seat in terms of margin for error, leaving us with almost none.

I really hope we focus on the critical gov and local seats in 2005, 2006 and beyond. We're in a down period on the federal level.
