8. Umm
Did you notice that these are cumilative donations for the period ended 9/31/03. Clark's donations are for a three-week period, others represent cummilative totals for a year or more.

10. Not exactly.
You are seeing a cummulative total of contribtuions by individuals aggregated by employer.

12. Those are INDIVIDUALS who work there as in the other donations.
Big difference.

None of them are as bad as they are supposed to look by lumping them all together like a corporate pac.

5. Would you look at that?
Clark's donation are a pittance in comparison. LOOK at Edwards! Holy Cow! Looks like he's tapped into the $$$$ of his fellow lawyers.

6. Why not show Kucinich's, Liebermann's and Sharpton's donors, too?
DK's largest donors are labor unions, IIRC. But that should hardly be a suprise, as he's spent his career standing up to them.

:D

7. I really have a problem with these because of the new contribution
laws. What could look like a sizable donation to a candidate from a corporation could quite possibly a bunch of single donations from one group. My brother in law works for Chrysler and quite a few of them have donated over $100 to a candidate. In essence, that would make it look like Chrysler itself is making these donations. Let's be the better guy here and not buy into this. That's what they'd like us to do. :hi:

9. For those who don't know...
Edited on Sat Jan-24-04 05:05 PM by AP
Skadden, Arps et al, Piper Rudnick, Holland & Knight, Akin, Gump et al, Hale & Dorr and Sullivan & Cromwell are some of the biggest national corporate law firms in America, and get most of their money from big corporations who don't blink at a huge bill.

Edwards's donors seem to be a bunch of regional law firms, that probably do plaintiff litigation for ordinary people who don't pay their bills unless they win.

Now, the fact is that the lawyers at those big firms on Kerry's list might be young people, idealists, just out of law school with fat paychecks and are motivated only by good. And it's also the case that many people are not going to like the idea that plaintiffs lawyers are providing the bulk of the support for Edwards.

But I thought I'd just point out that there is a very qualitative difference between the sorts of influence these two kids of law firms have on the landscape. In fact, when the lawyers on Kerry's lists aren't doing the paper work for IPO's or whatever, they're probably responding to discovery demands from lawyers on Edwards's list.

16. Mintz Levin is where Cam Kerry works and is a very liberal firm
considering its size and business- I know a dozen or so associates there and all are Kerry supporters and liberals. Not all attorneys are evil repugs :-)

Hale & Dorr is another gigantic firm- I've met a couple of their associates- liberals as well.

17. True. True. I bet most law firms give more money to Dems.
But I'm talking about the bigger picture: who and what do these firms represent.

Democrats cover a wide spectrum on the left. There are lots of interest to be represented. I'm just saying that the firms listed under Kerry's name (and Clark's for that matter) represent different interests than the firms on Edwards's list.

BTW, Monsanto's lawyers are heavily involved in the Democratic party.

18. Very true
Edwards has big trial lawyer support (I went to the Colorado Trial Lawyers annual shindig, he was the keynote speaker).

Kerry has a lot of big-time law firms- probably because he worked for the Middlesex DA. However, I was at a young professionals (read, lawyers) for Kerry party and there were a few trial lawyers and guys from smaller, independent firms :-)

19. Kerry was also in private practice in Mass after he was DA
and before he became Lt Gov.

From prep school, college, and politics, he clearly has extensive connecitons in Bos legal community.

14. Those numbers will change
Those numbers do not include last quarter, just Q3 of 2003. Clark had been in it about a month at the compilation of those numbers.
