Okay...many of you don't see how Janet's "Boob Baring " & Reality Sleeze
affects parents who have children listening and watching this stuff that cuts across the years and across the lines where parents are concerned whether they are Left or Right of the spectrum.

Many of you love to see "Tit's and Ass" and all the rest and think that it's denying YOUR FREEDOMS to talk about this issue...but let me tell you their are many parents who don't want their kids seeing this stuff and when you get into how we can "engage the Religious Right" you have your isssue RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOUR NOSE?

2. I'm a parent who NEVER ONCE considered the impact...
...of my child seeing female nipples on TV or anywhere else. Of course, my daughter saw them more frequently than I did.... She turned out pretty sane nonetheless.

Look, if you get all worked up about children seeing other people's bodies on TV then I'd seriously suggest that the appropriate solution is not to restrict everyone's freedom to look at whatever they want to look at, but rather to turn away yourself if what you see offends you. Use the "off switch" if you want to practice self-censorship-- that is your right and your responsibility. But meddling in the pleasures of others-- especially their innocent pleasures and entertainments-- is not your or my business. I think a great deal of what is broadcast on TV is offensively idiotic, so I don't watch it. Problem solved, and I'm happier for it without imposing my standards on anyone else.

3. I don't care for the types of programming you mention either.
Edited on Fri Jun-03-05 06:21 PM by BlackVelvetElvis
I don't care for extreme violence as well.
But, you can lock those channels you don't want your kids exposed to.
Or just get rid of your TV. I'm about at that point. I'd rather read a good book.

Iraq, the vote stealing and all the rest of the Bushworld crap to your kids?

11. The "Tit's and Ass" distract from Iraq Brutality...because it fits into
Republican Family Values.

Don't you get it? Get your children to accept that "pre-teen" sex is good by tuning them into MTV, and the rest of it and in the end they will understand that the way to fame and Glory is to BE ...Paris Hilton, Brittany Spears and the rest. And to shop at Walmart or Target for your pre-teen bear breasted clothing is the "ULTIMATE."

Hey...Hey....didn't we all want to be a "Rock/HipHop/Grunge/Punk star ourselves? But TODAY it's Much more Insidious how they plant "worms" in the brains of our kids from the time they are first "cognitive."

You parents who don't see it or thing you can thwart it are "smoking pipe dreams of idealism about your kids."

5. then don't let your kids watch
but please do not tell ADULTS what they can and cannot watch. I personally abhor the violence on TV. however, i can choose to turn off the tv, change the channel etc. I am so sorry that your child saw a part of the human body. Grow up... it is a boob. It's no secret that we all have them. You just let your kid know that it was a mistake and we don't usually let certain parts of the body show. You don't call them "naughty parts", that gives the wrong idea of what our bodies are. Christians tell us that "God made us" and yet they have more problems with the human anatomy...

6. You should probably be less worried about Janet's boob...
Edited on Fri Jun-03-05 06:33 PM by Karmakaze
and more worried about the organised violence that is NFL. If your kids were watching that, I can tell you a single boob did not harm them nearly as much.

7. There are three solutions to your problem
1. (My personal favorite) Pay attention to your child's life, so you can monitor what he or she watches on tv, and more importantly so you can raise him or her with enough self awareness and reasoning power that they know right from wrong and appropriate from inappropriate regardless of whether they happen to see something bad on television.

2. Voice your opinion to programmers and those who advertise with them and if enough people agree with you, you will find plenty of them catering to your wishes. You can program your tv to get only those stations and all will be well.

3. You can force your sense of morality and proper childrearing on the rest of us and get the government to censor and fine those who don't meet your moral code.

If you really think number three is necessary for you to raise a well adjusted child, I beg to differ. Using the power of the government to control expression and to regulate morality is wrong and dangerous. Far more dangerous than both of Miss Jackson's breasts put together.

Brent Bozell admits Murdoch Ownership bad for America/Repugs Failed FV's
Edited on Wed Jun-01-05 05:40 PM by KoKo01

I heard Amy Gross interview "self declared Democrat," Tim Winter, the Executive Director of Bozell's Parents Television Council on her NPR Show "Fresh Air" this afternoon. Tim Winter is working with Bozell (that RW Pig) to try to regulate Cable by allowing viewers to select the channels they want to watch from the Cable Companies rather than having to take the "tiered packages" we are forced to, today.

It was a great interview. Gross asked Winter all the right questions about wouldn't regulating Cable mean that gays, christian preachers and other groups be left out if the cables were regulated like the networks.

Here's an article from Washington Post which is excellent in showing that Republican Family Values is such TOTAL CRAP that even the RW'ers are unhappy with their own sucess!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
FIGHTING INDECENCY...One Blip at a Time..

He's never met Murdoch, Bozell says. "But those who know him have told me that he makes no bones about it" -- meaning why he backs "Nip/Tuck" and other shows the PTC finds offensive. "He does it to make money."

Um -- this is bad?

The question is problematic for a man whose responsibilities include overseeing the MRC's Free Market Project. The FMP, which seeks to defend the free enterprise system from alleged liberal slurs, "has nothing to do with the Parents Television Council," Bozell says -- though for him, there's clearly some cognitive dissonance involved.

But the dissonance isn't just within Bozell's modest empire. It's within the conservative movement as a whole."It's interesting to see the conservatives split," says Tim Winter, the PTC executive director, by which he means "social conservatism versus business and corporate conservatism."

-Snip-

Sure, the PTC recently struck out in its efforts to replace basic cable with an "a la carte" programming option. Under this plan, consumers would be able to choose only the cable fare they wanted and thus could exclude raunch-heavy channels like MTV and FX. Last month the FCC came out strongly against the idea, though some in Congress still favor it.

Score one for Viacom and News Corp.

But the PTC also joined what Bozell calls a mostly liberal-driven protest that derailed -- at least temporarily -- last year's FCC attempt to relax major media ownership rules. The proposed changes would have benefited big industry players like Murdoch, allowing them to expand the number of outlets they controlled in individual markets -- lessening the chance of community standards triumphing, in Bozell's view.

As for the politics of sleaze control: Bozell thinks the issue is still up for grabs.

ON EDIT:But, he says in the article he thinks Hillary can do it! Brent Bozell for Hillary?

13. The problem with this KoKo1
is that verbiage like "Family Values" plays into conservatives fears, fears about a culture that is moving slightly ahead of them.

If we Democrats and by extention the progressive movement, start to use the same language that the Religious Right™ does, then we are guilty of feeding the same fears.

It will get us nowhere as a society. We will simply keep repeating the same pattern of advance, retreat, advance, retreat, and so on, depending on who is in power at any point in time.

We progressives would be much better off in the long run, to bring conservatives along with us about *why* Janet's breast isn't a big deal. And *why* the carnage in Iraq is a so much greater evil. And about *why* a president that they trust would lie to them about such a topic as reasons for war.

14. I hear you...understand what you say...
But I still think this is an issue we Dems need to deal with and understand that there are parents who DO have a problem with what's out there, and many DU'ers don't understand it.

I'm not for going with the DLC groups who say we need to be more like the Repugs on Family Values...but this "Boob Issue" is one that concerns so many Dems and here on DU we can be attacked and drowned out, because we aren't Politically Correct enough to praise Janet's Boob rather than criticizing her Publicists for staging this when ordinary Americans were tuned into a ballgame.

The Repugs KNOW we Dems always defend the right to "Public Display" and they co-opt and win against us every time...because they don't acknowledge that many Dem families don't like what their kids are subjected to...as well as the Repugs.

This is an issue we can get common ground on..given that the Bozell group is supporting Dems on not allowing more Murdoch ownership of our airwaves.

Thanks for listening though. I do hear what you say...but it's a big issue with me so I have to keep at it...
