Southerners need to get to work
You live down there. You know the culture. Those are your brothers and cousins and sisters and Moms. You are the ones who have to change them. Northerners who go South would not have the same effect and would be charged with interfering in their politics. True Northern candidates dont spend much time down there, but its pretty well known that we need to spend money on states that we have at least half a chance to win.

Stop blaming northerners and get to work. We will take care of the people up here and you need to take care of the people down there.

1. No way!
Telling Texas dems to make most Texans democratic it's the same as telling few reps to make New York republican. It just won't work! If Bush would have said that he needs to invade Mars, they would support him. For southeners being a rep is like a freaking religion or something. Texas will never be blue state any time soon. Dems gotta spend time in Ohio, and Florida, where there is still chance some undesiders are there!

2. Am working on it!
Yes I'm here in the south! I start with my family though. I got my son-in-law and daughter to vote for Kerry in last election, and they are military. I have a daughter-in-law and step son who are die hard bushies and that has caused a bit of problem with the family. Finally, the rest of six kids are all democrats.

It isn't easy here - because even though I live here - I'm can be considered an outsider because of my views. People with my views are usually segregated to specific areas of town.

My strategy is more subtle considering I have allot of bushie acquaintances. I start with principles we agree on and gently debate issues without mentioning politics. Because I agree with them on some principles, they immediately think I am a bushie like them. Then I say things to get them to think about certain things. OK you might think this is wimpy but I've seen it work,, sort of slow southern style.. :9

4. Now thats what Im talkin about !!
Thats the spirit. A Can Do attitude.

I lived in Texas for 5 yrs. Between Galveston and Houston so I know the south a bit. Good folks. I loved the hospitality. But it still boils down to you folks and your working to change the stereotypes of the Democrats. I understand your work is cut out for you but you have the right stuff IMO. Oh BTW if you happen to come across Zell Miller in yer travels, punch him in the mouth for me, will ya? :)

3. That's why Dean is working on "the grass roots"
We have a huge impediment in the South. We let the Republicans become the "white party." If we split the white vote in most Southern states, we'd stomp the Republicans. In reality, the Democratic results often look like 90% black/minority vote + 25% white vote.

Dean actually brought this up in the primaries when he said he wanted the votes of guys with pick up trucks and gun racks. He was trounced when he said this. He also talked about how race is used to divide working people and have them vote against their interests.

Modest Proposal

Since Dean's analysis is right, let's use this as our theme in the South plus the issues. We won't lose any of the Black vote, we won't lose our base white vote (they know damn well this is true). We can only win with this.

Let's go for it. I'd love to see us win much more in the South.
