I feel compelled to mention this here every few months. There is a project, www.quiltsforsoldiers.com, which provides handmade quilts to wounded military personnel, physical or mental injuries. They are working on getting a tax-deductible status. Even without the tax benefits, needleworkers are contributing their time and money to do this. The average quilt costs about $100 to make including fabric and shipping.
Ok, it's not protesting Rumsfeld or writing your Senator. But it is providing some emotional support to the wounded, letting them know that their recovery is important to us.
Photos of the process and letters of support are included with each quilt. When I ship a quilt I like to include a pre-paid phone card, books of postage stamps (no they don't get free mail unless overseas), and any other small things I come across.
Please take the time to look at the web site or you can read a story in our local paper about the project at
http://www.alamedasun.com/islandspirit/41405islandspirit1.htmYou can contact www.quiltsforsoldiers.com or write to me directly if you would like to participate in this worthy project. Those who do not have sewing skills can sponsor a quilt (how about some DU quilts), provide stamps or phone cards, or pick-up shipping costs.
