Democracy on the March… Next Stop, Central America
6 June 2005
In a speech today at the Organization of American States, Bush called for furthering Democracy in the western world. The speech appeared to be a plug for the ongoing CAFTA debate which has been floundering for a year.
He also called on Congress to approve the Central America Free Trade Agreement. He said it would make about 80 percent of American exports to Central America and the Dominican Republic duty-free and open up a market of some 44 million consumers to U.S. products.
"CAFTA is more than just a trade agreement," he said. "It is a signal of the U.S. commitment to democracy and prosperity for our neighbors — and I urge the United States Congress to pass it."
In the Democratic Radio Address on Saturday, Sen. Byron Dorgan, of North Dakota, spoke against CAFTA, saying that “more jobs will be lost and the trade deficit will only widen if CAFTA is approved.”
