Beltway Dem insiders whine, 'Dean stole our Golden Goose!'
by Bob Johnson
DailyKos

What Golden Goose, you ask? The Golden Goose that dumped most of the party monies into the pockets of Clinton-era consultants under Terry McAuliffe. And the same Golden Goose that bought large donors access to party bigwigs.

. . .

Oh, if only these (so-called) fellow Democrats had been as concerned about beatng Bush as they seem to be about crushing Dean...

The Hill article points out that the Clinton-era big donors feel dissed by Dean. (Thus, Al From's and Carville's endless harangues.) Their complaints are as whiny as "not getting enough face time."

And one can rest assured that the Beltway consultants and sycophants are not at all happy that their high-paying clients can't get long audeinces with the party chairman -- who has been busy meeting with state-level party officials in an effort to rebuild the party from the ground up.

So while the Beltway insiders attempt to take Dean down, his popularity at the state level continues to rise

. . .

NOTE TO STATE PARTY OFFICIALS: The time to back up Dean is NOW! Don't wait, don't hesitate. The insiders are seeking to take him down because he threatens their gravy train.

Imagine the audacity of a Democratic Party chairman deciding that the states are more qualifed to spend party monies than the consultants in Washington.

3. The GOP knows this, that is why Biden & Lieberman get invited to talk
on all the corporate media shows. The GOP uses these DLCers as a tool to take down any GOP opposition. The DLCers let the GOP use them because they see the GOP as a way of keeping their meal ticket.

Here are my accumulated links. The truth is in here (a little buried, but there) -- the DLC was funded by rightwingers, and are way to cozy with PNAC, etc.

"We've got to repudiate, you know, the most strident and insulting anti-American voices out there sometimes on our party's left... We can't have our party identified by Michael Moore and Hollywood as our cultural values."
— Al From, CEO, Democratic Leadership Council

"You know, let's let Hollywood and the Cannes Film Festival fawn all over Michael Moore. We ought to make it pretty clear that he sure doesn't speak for us when it comes to standing up for our country."
— Will Marshall, President of the Progressive Policy Institute, the think-tank of the DLC

>snip<

In addition to his duties as the president of the PPI, Marshall kept himself busy in the last few years. Among other things, he served on the board of the Committee for the Liberation of Iraq, an organization co-chaired by Joe Lieberman and John McCain whose aim was to build bipartisan support for the invasion of Iraq.

Marshall also signed, at the outset of the war, a letter issued by the Project for the New American Century (PNAC) expressing support for the invasion. Marshall signed a similar letter sent to President Bush put out by the conservative Social Democrats/USA group on Feb. 25, 2003, just before the invasion. The SD/USA letter urged Bush to commit to "maintaining substantial U.S. military forces in Iraq for as long as may be required to ensure a stable, representative regime is in place and functioning."

One of just a handful of Marshall's co-signatories on that letter was Bruce Jackson, who also happens to be the head of the PNAC (whose letter Marshall also signed) and the founder of the aforementioned Committee for the Liberation of Iraq. Jackson is not only a neo-con of high rank and one of the chief pom-pom wavers for the war effort. He was also a vice president in the weapons division of Lockheed-Martin between 1993 and 2002—meaning that he was one of the implied targets of Bowling for Columbine, which came out in Jackson's last year with the company.

Clearly, Marshall was thinking about the good of the Democratic Party, and not the integrity of his grimy little network of missile-humping cronies, when he and Al From made the curious—and curiously conspicuous—decision to denounce Moore, Hollywood and France at the DLC meeting in early November.

PPI

===================================================
WILL MARSHALL: http://rightweb.irc-online.org/ind/marshall/marshall.phpAlthough Marshall calls himself a "centrist," he has associated himself with neoconservative organizations and their radical foreign policy agendas. At the onset of the Iraq invasion, Marshall signed statements issued by the Project for the New American Century calling for the removal of Saddam Hussein, advocating that NATO help "secure and destroy all of Iraq's weapons of mass destruction," and arguing that the invasion "can contribute decisively to the democratization of the Middle East." (7)

Marshall's credentials as a liberal hawk have been well established by his affinity for other PNAC-associated groups, including the U.S. Committee on NATO and the Committee for the Liberation of Iraq. Marshall served on the board of directors of the U.S. Committee on NATO alongside such leading neocon figures as Robert Kagan, Richard Perle, Randy Scheunemann, Paul Wolfowitz, Stephen Hadley, Peter Rodman, Jeffrey Gedmin, Gary Schmitt, and the committee's founder and president Bruce Jackson of PNAC. (8) At the request of the Bush administration, PNAC's Bruce Jackson also formed the Committee for the Liberation of Iraq, which, with DLC chairman Joseph Lieberman serving as co-chair together with John McCain, aimed to build bipartisan support for the liberation, occupation, and democratization of Iraq. Marshall, together with Robert Kerrey (who coauthored Progressive Internationalism), represented the liberal hawk wing of the Democratic Party on the committee's neocon-dominated advisory board. (9) Other advisers included James Woolsey, Elliot Cohen, Newt Gingrich, William Kristol, Jeane Kirkpatrick, Joshua Muravchik, Chris Williams, and Richard Perle.

On February 25, 2003, Marshall joined an array of neoconservatives marshaled by the Social Democrats/USA-a wellspring of neoconservative strategy-to sign a letter to President Bush calling for the invasion of Iraq. Marshall and others asked the president to "act alone if that proves necessary" and then, as a follow-up to a military-induced regime change in Iraq, to implement a democratization plan. The SD/USA letter urged the president to commit his administration to "maintaining substantial U.S. military forces in Iraq for as long as may be required to ensure a stable, representative regime is in place and functioning." Others signing the SD/USA letter included Hillel Fradkin, Rachelle Horowitz, Bruce Jackson, Penn Kemble, Robert Kagan, James Woolsey, Nina Shea, Michael Novak, Clifford May, and Ben Wattenberg. Street of Democrats at the same time Dean is rebuilding State parties and replacing big corporate support with thousands of smaller contributions.

Corporations are taking a big risk by not diversifying their political payoffs into both parties the way they did in the heyday of the DLC. When Democrats retake the White House or houses of Congress, there may be a chance for real progressive reform, for the first time since the 1960s.

12. Down is up and up is down
Could it be that the corporate Dems view the the porgressive side of the party as the the moderate GOP view the Christian Right?

If so - How the F$%k did this happen? Has the center moved so far to the right that any egalitarian or social thought is automatically equated with radical communism?

Biden's insistence that we must play this fiasco out in Iraq - because their will be civil war (implied - but not said - is I believe in the noe con war!)

Going after Dean because he is strongly suggesting cutting ties with all corps and going back to the roots.

What the hell is left of US Corporations anyway? GM has been reduced to junk bond status. I have watched as Milwaukee has closed ALL of it's beer manufacturing plants with the exception of Miller - Blatz, Shiltz, Pabts, -- ALL GONE - Briggs and Stranton, Allis Chalmers, Pelton Steel, Johnson Controls, AO Smith, all GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONE!

And the Dems stiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiilllll want to be friends with the corporate world..!!!!^^^^?>???

Unbelievable!

13. A Pure populist movement without compromise.
We don't need TV ads to win. People will know that our hearts are pure and they will stop drinking the Kool-Aid. The MSM will get behind us and sing our praise.

Or:

Perhaps we need to find a way to work with corporate interests on our own terms. Not all businesses are run by Neocons. Labor is pro business.

Even if we could raise all of the money that we need without the help of corporate intersts would we want to? Corporate America is a stakeholder in the political process. I am not advocating corporate pandering and corruption. No ethical corporation should doubt that we want them to succeed or that we will listen to their concerns.

Perhaps removing neocons is a bit like removing steroids from sports. The best athletes will succeed.

I am not for a second denying that there is an enormous problem with Corporate America and its involvement in the political precess.
--

I am fully behind Dean. He acts decisively but his thinking has always been nuanced.

20. "find a way to work with corporate interests on our own terms"
Edited on Tue Jun-07-05 10:58 PM by AirAmFan
That's a great phrase for exactly what Democrats need to do.

From a political standpoint, not all corporations are incapable of being part of a revived Democratic coalition favoring the basic interests of working people. Most corporations operate in very competitive markets that keep their greed in check. Competition in those markets keeps any individual company from becoming too big, limits profits, reduces over time the cost of products to consumers, and drives companies to improve their products to attract customers. For example, look at the market for computer monitors.

Other corporations operate in markets where bribing Federal regulators can gain them huge monopoly profits. For example, think of pharmaceutical companies, banks, insurance companies, stock brokers, credit card companies, broadcast TV, cable TV providers, telephone companies, etc. Look at websites that track political contributions and you'll see that those industries are the ones who account for the lion's share of political money, have the most clout with Dubya and Rove, and are corrupting most Republicans and some Democrats.

Back in the era of Kennedy and Johnson, Democrats were strong suppporters of small and medium-size businesses, and dead-set against the political aspirations of monopolists and oligopolists. Today, the situation has been reversed by some Democrats, such as Biden (credit card company shill) and Lieberman (insurance company mouthpiece).

15. The party can not afford to alienate the grassroots.
I think that they just want to clip his wings a bit. Most of the overt Democratic opposition is coming from people that will be running in 2008.

It is interesting that the MSM is making a big deal out of it.

18. This pisses me off.
"What we are witnessing is a coordinated effort by recent Democratic Party "insiders" to undercut Dean's chairmanship. Yep, the same folks who took on-the-record and anonymous potshots at Kerry and his campaign are now running an organized effort to get Dean dumped from the party chairmanship.

How ironic. Biden, Lieberman, Carville and numerous "anonymous party sources" spent the better part of the general election campaign undercutting Kerry and his campaign/campaign staff."

The repukes should be having their infighing with the moderates and the zellouts and the Dems should be uniting to bring Victory in 2006..instead it looks like all hell is going to break loose with the dlc types and the People.

assholes. I'll take Dr. Dean over McAuliffe anyday. McAuliffe had our candidate chosen before the friggin' primaries were even over. I'll never forget his gig on Face The Nation where he "slipped up" and said he couldn't wait to watch John Kerry debate Bush. Problem being.....THE FREAKIN' PRIMARIES WERE STILL GOING ON. It was quite obvious who the DNC wanted as THEIR candidate and that's who we got.
The DNC ain't goin' anywhere without US...The Grassroot BACKBONE of their f****** party. :grr:
