But it looks like you can be a VERY good Party Chairman by doing so. Dean's got much more control over his mouth than he used to, but he's still a bit of a shoot-from-the-hip guy, and whenever the various vultures swoop down to misrepresent what he says, they have to at least give attention to the skewed version of the statements.
Even if it is reckless to point out that many Republicans haven't done a decent day's work in their lives, the act of publicizing it can easily backfire: hell, the statement rings true. The original statement, about unfair allocation of resources to voting in working-class neighborhoods gets some more air time in the process, and people hear what they know is somewhat true about a feckless, hereditary elite. Calling the GOP a white christian club necessitates some backtracking, but it too rings true.
He's stirring up some fuss, and he's doing a lot of it in red states.
It's perfectly fine to have a Party Chair be a bit overstated and somewhat of a rabble rouser; let those who have to stand for election tread a bit more lightly. Even when explaining the present statement, the image of a bunch of caucasian-only (hence racist) christians conjures up all sorts of visceral images: white hoods, stone faced killjoys, lockstep country-club elites and a coldness of the soul. Fine by me. Even by stirring up anti-gay hatred and targeting the religious, Junior can barely clear 10% of Black voters. Non-christians are very much against him.
