presidential hopefuls? (Pelosi is the exception.)

Unfortunately, Dean played into the hands of his opponents
Those in the party who were less than enthusiastic with his rise to the chairmanship are going to try to skewer him, and on top of that, the Republicans are going to come and attack him at the same time. He's gonna be raked through the coals a few times before this is over.

11. His name might be raked through the coals, but
then he can't control what his opponents and enemies do with his name.

Nothing the republicans say really has any impact unless the Democratic party decides to concede to them.

The DLC is pissed about having lost popularity in the party and lost control of party positions that have for almost 20 years played every tune the DLC called.

The obvious circumstance is that Dean is saying in public what everyone is saying in private...

The christian conservatives through the Republican Party have dangerous influence on policy. The majority of these theocons are white (or passing).

The Republican party has backed and continues back legislation and regulations which have the effect of racial profiling and which burden the poor(who are disproportionately variously colored) to benefit the rich (who are disproportionately white).

While in no way impugning Dean's credentials as a plain speaker/loose cannon, I just want to point out that the first and most obvious results of this kind of apparently candid comment are that the head of the Democratic National Committee is now regularly making headlines, and that questions like "well, IS the Republican party just a bastion of scary white right-wing Christian nuts who want to send everyone to re-education camps, or was that unfair?" are now being regularly debated.

This framing you've heard so much about, that's what this is, people. You can argue about whether it's a good idea but don't assume it's spontaneous. He's figured out that controversy gets more press than rolling over and playing moderate. Same thing with Reid. "Well, is Bush a liar, or was that unfair?" You see how it works? You plant the question, and then the media will try to shovel it over, but it never really goes away. That's what they did to us with the SwiftVets thing, and it's probably good someone on our side has figured out how to do it to them.

Howard Dean unmuzzled
Thursday, May 19, 2005 Posted: 12:47 PM EDT (1647 GMT)

WASHINGTON (Creators Syndicate) -- After Howard Dean last weekend declared Tom DeLay ought to be in jail, a longtime Democratic operative told me the party's national chairman had momentarily ripped off his muzzle but that it soon would be restored.

--------------snip-----------------------
National chairmen are supposed to fire up the troops, but Dean's rhetoric crosses a line. What he said was too much even for so tough a partisan Democrat as Rep. Barney Frank, who attended his state's convention in Lowell and was appalled by Dean's language.

Even... uh... Howard Dean?

But back on topic, you said, "The only reason Biden ISN'T (DLC) is because he doesn't need their backing financially."

I ask again, you have a quote on that?

And... explain why Kerry and Edwards are DLC and certainly DON'T need their backing financially.

23. Kerry's a presidential hopeful
and has been quite supportive. What does that do to your theory.

He tried to drag the insiders by the ear and get them to welcome Dean as he contributed a million dollars to the DNC so that Dean would have a nice starting point, asking the Kerry email community to follow suit as well. If you look at his PAC, it mirrors Dean's grassroots message. I don't think that was an accident either.

And no bashing out of him either.

Leiberman is not a hopeful. Pelosi is not a hopeful. Therefore all the "bashers" are not hopefuls.

Conversely, one of the hopefuls is not a basher. Might not be pertinent to your point, but I like to point that out when I can.

Perhaps it could be said that a higher percentage of potential candidates made negative comments of one sort or another than did elected Democrats in general.

I am glad that DUers and others rose to defend Dean, especially when the media predictably got involved. But I am looking forward to getting back onto issues now, exactly as Dean said at the Senate Press Conference
