What is "SKull and Bones"?

5. IMHO just like the Masons, et al

A "Just for Boyz" treehouse club for the rich and powerful and they make all these secret rituals and make it all secret and so to outsiders, if successful, legends build up around it and say... look how much power they have! The organization seems to be so powerful and influential JUST because the people who belong are powerful and influential.... there is nothing special per se about the organization. If the organization didn't exist, the same people would be socializing and networking together at a local country club. There is no mystery about it or magical powers about it.

on edit: not to say anyone literally thinks there is something "magical" about it, I am just saying that some people talk about it like it is the Illuminati(sp?) or something... IMHO it is just a sideshow distraction and makes us look almost stooped in superstitions, etc.

It's one of many secret societies at Yale dating back to the nineteenth century. All the secret societies are housed in windowless buildings that look like mausoleums, hence the nickname "the tombs."

One night in spring is "tap night," when the outgoing seniors go around and invite the juniors who have been chosen. They either accept or refuse.

There are all sorts of rumors about what they do, but all the stories agree that the new members have to get drunk and tell everyone else their sexual history.

Supposedly the Bonesmen watch out for one another and help their fellow Bonesmen climb corporate and political ladders.

It's not entirely sinister though. I once saw a list of the Bonesmen up through 1980, and I discovered that I knew two of them personally. (I was a grad student at Yale in the 1970s.) One has become a professor of Asian Studies, and the other is an Orthodox rabbi.

William Sloane Coffin (antiwar chaplain) and Lewis Lapham (editor of Harper's) were also Bonesmen, but they seem to have gotten over it.
