In light of Bush's falling approval ratings, why does he still have so

much political power? I can understand why Congress gave him carte blanche right after 9/11 (don't agree, but understand), but now with his approval ratings under 45%, I wouldn't think they would need to bow before him anymore.

I know that many in Congress are far right wingers, but many are (or should be) more moderate, or at least able to think on their own. Yet, the Senate is confirming radical judges, and I'm guessing that Bolton will be confirmed into the UN. These are people who should not even be considered for their positions. But that's what Bush wants, so that's what the Senate will give him.

If I could look 50 years into the future, I think that historians will find Bush to be the worst president in US history, but also one of the most powerful to have ever filled the position (in terms of pushing his agenda through).

3. It is merely a matter of perception

I think the only thing the GOP learned from Watergate was that it was important to have the media in your pocket before you get into power (that the President is a servant of the people who should follow the Constitution didn't enter their minds). The GOP is under the illusion that because the media is underreporting Bush's gaffes and missteps, people don't realize what's happening. Problem is that the only ones being deluded are the ones in the GOP. Too many folks have been to Iraq and are reporting back to loved ones what its really like. Too many people have lost their jobs. Too many people see that Bush didn't really cut taxes for the majority of folks, but instead caused states to raise taxes and cut services. I could go on and on, but you get the picture.

It tipped his hand. He is not an elected leader. He is a front man for a large machine that has pretty much taken over the world. He knows national populations have no power and no say the way things are now.

10. It's really pretty simple.

The Repug party over the past few decades has undergone a quiet purge. All those not either taxation right wingnuts or religious wingnuts have been weeded out. There are a few exceptions, basically relics of the old Northeastern more liberal wing of Republicanism. But, they are a powerless, dying breed.

So, the Republicans control the Congress which is packed with true believers. They don't care about polls. They know the sheeple will still back them at election time because of wedge issues.

They also know the press is in friendly corporate hands so they don't have to worry about any significant criticism from that corner.

They also know the Democrats are weak, divided, and leaderless.

Our only hope is that the sheeple finally wake up. That won't happen until they are directly negatively affected by Repug policies.
