Keep pressure on Congress, re: Downing Memos

Write your Congressman to call for a formal inquiry into the revelations contained in the Downing Street Memos, including the new ones revealed today by the Times of London.

Here is the email I just sent off to Sherrod Brown, my Rep.

Now comes another "Downing Street Memo", as reported by the Washington Post and the Times of London today. This transcript of a JULY 21, 2002 meeting gives further proof that planning, in detail, was underway for an invasion of Iraq early in 2002 and that the invasion was a "forgone conclusion".

I know you support John Conyers and signed his letter to Bush asking for an explanation of the first "Downing Street Memo" and now that more evidence has emerged which calls the integrity of the administration into question I think a full blown Congressional inquiry is in order.

I urge strong action. The time for tactful diplomatic language has passed us by. Now is the time to shine a light on the rat's nest that the executive has become.

2. we need to keep the momentum with fresh tactical objectives

biggest risk is the danger that people will think they've got the desired attention and back off, with expectations that this is on auto pilot now and will just happen all by itself.

the reason this worked is because everyone had clear instructions of the immediate tactical goals of the movement and they were achievable so people plugged away at it and saw progress in numbers. we had i) sigs for petition, ii) daily press targets.

i'm concerned that we need to come up with fresh tactics with associated objectives - once we've completed a tactic we give it a week or so and then introduce a new thing for everyone to pitch in to achieve. i'm afraid if things drag out like the press outreach could unless reinvented in some way, people will lose interest (and reporters will get annoyed).

once the petition is finished, then what? how do we keep the pressure on the reporters after initially contacting all of the important ones? karl is waiting for us to get bored so this will just blow over like usual. reporters only reacted to our pressure, but all they've done is wring their hands at best; perhaps next we pressure specific outlets to assign the story for ongoing investigation by a dedicated reporter who is given resources/budget/time to get to the bottom of things and report on developments in congress, etc. along the way.

thnoughts? who are the activist 'leaders' of the movement? we need recognizable chiefs to orchestrate all of the indians while the interest is holding.

Here is my standard letter to the Media:


Dear Sir/Madam:

As you know, on May 1 of this year a document now commonly referred to as “|The Downing Street Memo” was released into the British Press. This document raises serious question about how the administration was handling intelligence related to Iraq and appears to suggest that the Bush Administration had already decided on war when publicly it was claiming that no such decision had been made.

This document and perhaps other documents suggest that the Bush administration was determined to “fix intelligence” around a predetermined policy.

It is most disturbing that there has been a virtual media blackout regarding “The Downing Street Memo”. Even more disturbing is the absence in the America media of any credible discussion or coverage regarding strong, credible and independent evidence that the Bush Administration intentionally mislead the U.S. Congress, the media and the American people.

I do hope you will accept the responsibility to address this issue and provide serious investigative journalism into this matter.

Furthermore, on Thursday June 16, 2005, Rep. John Conyers, Jr., ranking minority member of the House Judiciary Committee, and other House members will hold a hearing to consider testimony concerning the Downing Street minutes and questions of possible fixing of prewar intelligence. I do hope you will be giving full coverage to these events.
