We were attacked on 9/11 by a few rabid people that were not representatives of Iraq or any other country. They succeeded because our FBI and intelligence apparatus failed. They were criminals that succeeded beyond their wildest dreams because of our incompetence.
But, as an excuse, we declared "war on terrorism", as if it were another Cold War, with nuclear weapons pointed at us every minute of the day. Now, we will spend our national treasury and the lives of many of our troops rather than face the truth about the attacks of 9/11.
We would have been better served to strengthen our intelligence and border and immigration security, rather than declare war on the world. It was a mistake and continues to be a mistake. We could have traced down and captured every criminal that was involved in 9/11 without going to war. But that was a convenient excuse and we will pay dearly for many years to come.
