Many Americans Call O'Reilly a Journalist

By WILL LESTER, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON -- About 40 percent of Americans say they consider talk show host Bill O'Reilly a journalist -- more than would define famed Washington Post reporter Bob Woodward the same way, according to a poll conducted this spring.

O'Reilly is on the Fox News Channel, offering his often tart conservative opinions, while Woodward has spent a career writing news stories and books.

Only 30 percent of those polled said Woodward was a journalist, while 53 percent said they didn't know, despite the fact that Woodward and Carl Bernstein broke the Watergate story that ultimately led to President Nixon's resignation in 1974.

More than a quarter said talk show host Rush Limbaugh was one, while one in five said they considered newspaper columnist George Will to be a journalist.

3. I have a republican friend who thinks this...BUT...
he wasn't republican for the last election. He hates Bush. After voting republican his entire life, he cast his first dem vote in 2004, for Kerry.

Yet, in talking to him, he still watched Fox as his primary news source, and still loves O'Reilly. "You gotta give the guy credit; he knows his stuff, and he doesn't take any shit from anyone."

You can fool some of the people all of the time when you're Fox.

6. Yes, but
Name recognition counts for a lot.

Knowing that some people think Bill O'Reilly is a journalist but Woodward is not explains why some people still think that we found WMD in Iraq and Saddam ordered 9/11.

8. It's only name recognition. Short memories. most have forgotten any of
the players, some even have forgotten Nixon. "That's ancient history and thus irrelevant" (you know, kind of like Brit and French meddling in the Middle East and fucking it all up a century ago had "nothing" to teach us?) What surprised me is how easily the French remembered the lesson and how easily the Brits forgot it.
