Will Bush nominate Scalia or Thomas for Chief Justice?
Will it be Antonin Scalia, who's conservative activism will make the Far Right jump for joy?

Or will it be Clarence Thomas, who is much younger than Scalia and whose nomination would allow Bush to play the race card?

1. I think it will be Thomas
because the race card. On the other hand, it may enrage the racist arm of the GOP....

2. Scalia
Despite their ages, their life expectancies aren't much different.

3. itll be scalia
Scalia's number one goal is to reverse Roe v. Wade. Since most of the liberal justices will die soon, he could very well get that done.

8. Not that he would actually think about this, but
Scalia is much smarter than Thomas. How many actual opinions has Thomas written while on the bench. I had heard that he is really pretty idiotic. Scalia is smart--cruel, crooked--but smart.

9. Thomas, because
I hate to say it, because he is black. Republicans love to say, what don't want an African American to achieve Chief Justice - why, this person is qualified and Democrats are trying to keep him out.

11. I don't really care who becomes the next Chief Justice
Edited on Mon Jun-13-05 09:11 PM by Idioteque
I'm more worried about who is going to replace Renquist as a new associate justice. That's what could tip the balance of the court.

14. I don't think it matters much
But I think he might name O'Conner first for a year. Then Scalia.

16. O'Connor as chief justice?
If she's made Chief Justice, why would O'Connor retire after only a year in that coveted spot?

20. Because she is old and sick
And probably wants to retire during a Republican Administration.

I don't think she wants to be Chief Justice. But would probably do it for a year or so for historical purposes.

17. I think it will be Scalia.
Thomas just doesn't seem to have a personality of his own, but just goes along with Scalia on pretty much everything. Doesn't he hardly ever speak, or write an opinion?

21. Thomas is black
It'll be Scalia.

One thing people forget is this: The GOP is deeply racist. Sure they've got Condi and Thomas but they still answer to white men so it's ok they have been "raised up" to high position. Try to elevate either one to where they do not answer to a white man and you will get strong resistance.
