The exit poll numbers out of Iowa were particularly telling.
Young voters went for Kerry
Anti-war voters went for Kerry
First time caucus goers went for Kerry
Elderly overwhelmingly went for Kerry
College towns went for Kerry

etc. etc. etc.

With the Dean campaign so focused on campaign process and how they were going to win. Their loss in Iowa undercut everything they had told their supporters for months.

The scream was the least of it.

People are assholes, its such a horrible thing. I used to think a lot of the attacks made on Dean were sick and stupid like he's a draft dodger, civil unions will hurt him, now I see simliar shit on Kerry, I didnt like it then I dont like it now, I am far from being a fan of Dean but he has my support if hes the nominee, its just I have a different candiate than you. I wish you good luck in NH, and hope someday that unity can happen.

didn't cause Iowans to reject Dean and his campaign. The rejection by Iowans caused the petulance (which is still going on)

Iowans made a decision, after months of seeing all the candidates (except the two not on the ballot, and they got no delegates.) Dean came in third and made a speech that many of his supporters liked but was a real shock to many people.

It shocked me when I saw it -- and I saw it live and formed my opinion of it as I watched, without anyone else telling me what to think of it. I presume many other people did the same. I noticed that for the first hour or two, the news anchors and commentators were fairly subdued in their comments about the speech, apparently shocked themselves and unsure what to say.

But Dean was losing support in NH before Iowa, and would have lost more NH support because he came in third in Iowa, even if the speech hadn't alarmed a lot of people.

As I said before Iowa, Dean's raised a pile of money and fired up a lot of supporters, which is a credit to him and his campaign, but nothing counts except actual votes. Rumors of his unstoppability were premature.

And if money is what wins an election, Bush wins.

A tip o' the hat to Kerry...but that kind of drama gained him a 15% surge in Iowa... and, sorry, probably won't happen again.
