Have we not learned anything from Watergate?
What is wrong with we Americans? We know Bush has repeatedly lied to us.

Members of this administration had dreams of overthrowing Saddam and taking over Iraq even before they were elected. Their real reasons wouldn't have flown so they used 9/11 and the WOT shamelessly to engage this country in a terrible venture.

If the media is so liberal, why are they not screaming for Bush to answer the questions that arise from the Downing Street Memo? It seems like Bush can just ignore anything he wants to hide and be able to get away with it. If this memo is true, then Bush should be impeached.

This DSM could very well be Bush's Watergate.

1. If we had truly learned from Watergate, Reagan would have been impeached
Over Iran/Contra, and daddy Bush with him.

9. Your brief post scoops up the turd
while others push the sand around the catbox.

The period from Watergate to now is a continuum. The crimes and scams being perpetrated now are a continuance.

So, where along the line did healthy skepticism turn to blind allegiance? HOW DID SO MANY FORGET SO MUCH IN SO LITTLE TIME? And now scratch their heads and try to wake up from their two decade long nap.

The sharpest posts on this subject on DU sound (clinical and theoretical) like opinions of people who learned the shit as history, rather than experienced it in life.

You're right about Iran/Contra. That was the true beginning of the end.

2. And its Companion Question:
Have we not learned anything from (the first) Viet Nam? The two topics are somehow intertwined in my fading memory...

3. A good case does need time to develop
But there are significant differences between the two administrations.

Nixon viewed the media as his enemy & didn't have the support this one has. Two leftovers from that administration who are major players in this administration have infected this country with the same dirty business but have learned from Nixon's mistakes in dealing with the media.

There's a partnership between the corporate-owned media & this administration. Going into the fifth year of this administration, we've seen the most in-your-face, blatant corruption go by untouched, even sanctioned, by the media.

This administration's "partner" isn't going to be on our team, but I do think we have a chance if the People persist in keeping the DSM alive.

8. Rove learned from Viet Nam and Watergate we're seeing this today!
No video coverage of Dead US. troops returning at Andover, and the lie/deny thing - change the issue run hide evade, the DSM should stay first and foremost the top of the list for DU'ers

7. I often wonder...
...if we truly learned anything from Watergate. It should have taught us to keep a better eye on our government.

Whatever happens to the current regime, I hope it teaches people another lesson. Keep a better eye on your government for God's sake!

Over the years people have a tendency to forget things. The press was very independent back then. The media has completely fallen victim to the corporations. Instead of reporting government corruption, they'd rather keep it covered up. It's very sad. People are being defrauded because the media is not doing its job.

I have noticed lately that it seems like the media is trying to change. Perhaps they've realized that the propaganda isn't working anymore and people want to know what's going on in their government. Maybe it's because their ratings were dropping and it sent them a message. It probably told them to go back to being journalists like the old days.

10. Watergate was a low crime compared to ...
everything this administration has done. Valerie Plame, still sticks in my craw - treason. Our problem seems to be exactly what the retired CIA agent said during the 'DSM' hearings. The corruption goes back to Reagan. Bush has all but ruined our national security, he's worse than Watergate.

11. The real question is "Where is the Washington Post?"
They were the ones who brought Nixon down. They seem to want to keep the Shrub in office.

12. Another question: why do Americans go along with the bullshit?
Bad actor/inarticulate faux presidents, corporatized media, evil spinmeisters propagandizing the political process, all the hints on this thread......

Why have Americans allowed this to happen? Where is the responsibility of Americans to pay attention and demand true accountability?
