1. Probably waiting
to see what their spin is. I'm curious myself. Their spin, so far, is to pretend it doesn't exist in the hopes that it goes away.

When they start actually addressing it, they'll give fuel to someone like Dean who's quick enough to find the weaknesses in their arguments and slash them to the quick before they even see it coming.

Or so I hope.

5. It may also be useful..
...to have a voice which demands attention waiting in the wings in case coverage quiets down for a spell.

14. Preserve the Dean card, but not for much longer
OK, definitely Dean needs to speak plainly and openly about the DSM. Bush lied about war. Obviously, all previous DNC and RNC chairs gave opinions on issies. So it is not out of line to have an opinion. This particular issue is about lying us into an optional war with a non-threatening country, and committing the worst impeachable offenses imaginable. To be simply silent on this is inexcusable. Kerry I've given up on. There are so many issues that Kerry could have grabbed by the horns if he would just be vocal and coherant at the right times. Dean is not afraid of confrontation, and the DSM is less than 2 months old, and clearly building on an upward trajectory of public visibility. I think/hope that Dean will speak out plainly but frankly abouty the DSM and related evidence/issues. But as far as timing, he's can still wait to maximize his impact when he takes it on. That big interview recently he was relentless on Delay. If you played any 15 second part of that interview, it was an smooth, clear indictment of Delay. The timing was good and it was effective. After a lot of the Delay scandal being in public view, Dean dealt the final blow to Delay. Isn't Delay a lot less visible since then? (seems that way to me) If Dean could do the same thing effectively to Bush, the difference would be that Bush can't slink away like a representative could. Delay had to retreat from Dean's attack. When the DSM reaches high visibility As public pressure builds, as some point in the (near) future, Dean can have another high-visibility interview and be 100% on DSM, and then any 15 second clip will be unavoidably about the concrete impeachable offenses of the President, at a time when there will be high visibility and high scrutiny of the opinions of leadership positions like Dean's on the matter of the DSM.

However, if too much time goes by, and we haven't played the Dean card at the near-maximum of DSM visibility (to boost it to the final stage - a groundswell for chimpeachment) then he will lose credibility with me as a fighter, and will fall into Kerry's "just a friend" catagory. So Dean has got to diliver. If he hasn't said anything after, say, the next 90 days, I'd be seriously concerned about Dean.

10. He's probably playing it safe
He knows what would pour out of his mouth if he got on a microphone and started talking about this! He's probably thinking he better lay low right now.

I am saying this with the greatest respect for Dean.
I'm glad Dean can scream!!!

4. My take is
he is leaving it up to those that can do someting about it. Dean's job is to energize the base, and he has been doing that. If he were to say something dead on but easily manipulated, this whole thing could go south. We need ALL our elected officials to fulfill their duty to America and ask the question, "is this an impeachable offense"? I think it would be wrong for Dean to take the ball on this.

Just my 2 cents

8. I believe you are right. One doesn't see the RNC chair come out
and make statements on each and every GOP issue.

9. I agree
That's basically's Dean's job. His job isn't to do politics or policey. I'm sure he and the other democratic leaders have out a plan. Harry Reid has come out about it (check it out in GD). What can Dean do anyways? Just talk about it. It's best if he just stays with doing what he's doing now and campaigning around.

6. Dean is not a legislator. He's letting Dem congresspeople do thier job.
Dean's main job is raising money and rallying the troops. The DSM may have a long, slow fuse... but it will blow.

Conyers warned us that Thursdays forum was the first step in a long battle.

Patience grasshopper.

11. Good point. Now that Conyers and MSM are starting to pick up steam,
Dean can focus on slamming the Republicans on "pocketbook" issues such as Health Care, Medicare and other domestic issues.

16. Dean is always to busy pulling his foot out of his mouth
to do anything positive for this party. I used to be a Dean lover, but lately he is a bumbling nut. The voice of our party must be the sharpest tool in the shed that we can offer , not a dull lawn mower with a stuttering engine. Fire away Deaneacts...but I think I am right on this one. The man turn people off. His popularity was , I'm convinced was only due to his opposition and truth telling about Iraq. Beyond that he is not a good chairman in my humble opinion.I have written him on many occasions with no reply. His predecessor was quick to reply and wanted input from the little people.

18. Have wanted Dean to do well and yes

I am bunkered in my concrete tee pee. Got my flame retardant has mat suit on,

I WISH Dean would do better but it seems he gets worse! At some point we have to face facts and reality. Either he gets it together real soon or we will loose as long as he is chairman. I leaning to wards Wes Clark as a leader now. So fire away I got a general in my bunker! It's a bit uncomfortable, RedTail Wolf with a Blue Coat chief but I want to change this country!

19. I think that's a good assessment--so far
I haven't written Dean off yet. He's a smart guy, he may learn. But so far you're right. Even his strongest supporters have had to spend their time explaining why comments that pissed off even many of us liberals were really good things. That's why he's not talking about the DSM--he compromised himself as a non-partisan spokesperson, so his comments on the DSM would quickly polarize the argument. As the document stands now, even the Republicans are disturbed by it, and many of them are questioning Bush, at least privately, and wondering what to do. They are staying non-commital, so they can go either way, depending on which way the story breaks.

But the moment Dean jumps into the fray, the issue becomes polarized, and both sides go to their corners, and the Republicans quit analyzing and start closing ranks. Then the issue becomes a shouting match, and it dies.

I agree with you on why Dean became popular early on. I felt the same about him--I loved him for saying what I believed, but the more I watched, the more I thought he was in over his head, without the self control to handle the spotlight.

His Scream, which I watched live and never saw again (I don't watch television much so I didn't see any of the commentaries after it) just reenforced what I thought of him already--not quite ready for prime time.

But I haven't written him off. Notice he's been low key after his "white Christian" comments. His supporters don't understand why the comment was offensive, but Dean seems to. So he can learn. If he can keep his passion, yet learn to focus--as he must have done as governor--then he could be for us yet.

IMHO.

20. Dean was on AAR's Politically Direct on 6/5 talking about it.
The show is sponsored by People for the American Way. It was a good appearance. Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer is the guest this week.

23. Because he decided it was more important to criticize

flyers that some unknown person(s) were passing out at the DSM hearings the other day than to point out that BUSH LIED and the DSM is more definitive proof.

Dean cares more about some little pamphlet offending Israel and AIPAC then he does about our country having been taken to war on the basis of LIES.

25. Those flyers were being passed out at DNC HEADQUARTERS the other day...
so it is important not to give the right wing easy targets. And you KNOW they'd use it.

Of course, if you want to overlook all that Dean's said about Iraq before and after the election, please do.
