5. Another view: Flooding the wire on Saturday is good

When stories appear on the wire on a Saturday, that means they're intended for print publication the next day -- Sunday.

And Sunday is by far the highest circulation day for nearly all significant newspapers. When the newspaper's wire editor sits down later today to find stuff to put inside Sunday's A section, the editor is going to see all these AP stories and might even wonder: "Golly, if AP is putting all these stories out there, maybe I should run at least one of them inside Sunday's paper."

By flooding the wire with this stuff on Saturday, this increases the chances that more people reading Sunday papers -- when they generally have much more time to spend with the paper -- will see something about DSM.

12. I'd say that's unlikely, but look inside

My previous job included editing the A section of the Sunday paper. Here's some insight into how things worked at a midsize paper:

-- The Sunday front page lineup is mostly determined several days in advance, in absence of any serious (usually local) late-breaking news. Lots of editors all up and down the line have to sign off on what's on the Sunday front page.

-- When I had an open wire spot on a Sunday front page, I had to call the managing editor at home on Saturday and tell him what I was planning on running there. I almost never got turned down, but I had to make the call.

-- Inside the A section is another story, however. Depending on how many ads were sold, there could be anywhere from almost-none to lots and lots of space inside the A section, waiting to be filled with wire stories. And Saturday afternoons can be mighty slow on the wires. So, when there are good stories on the wire on Saturday, they often stand a pretty good chance of landing inside the A section with little effort at all.
