...is nowhere near the current GOP leadership/punditocracy in terms of nastiness. In fact, from what I understand of his political stances, he was closer to a Mark Hatfield-style Republican than a Tom DeLay or George W. Bush.

Now for all I know, you're an Oregonian and have details I know nothing of, but in terms of my personal Rings of Hell for Republicans, Packwood goes with the lustful and not the treacherous and therefore is not as dangerous.
