Marine captain from Chicopee dies in Iraq

Capt. John W. Maloney, 36, of Chicopee and Lance Cpl. Erik R. Heldt, 26, of Hermann, Mo. died while conducting combat operations near Ar Ramadi, Iraq.

Green Beret Christopher N. Piper died on Thursday of injuries sustained in Afghanistan on June 3. Staff Sgt. Piper, 43, was a Marblehead native. Army National Guard Spc. Michael J. Kelley of Scituate, 26, died June 8 during a mortar attack on his base, also in Afghanistan.

At least 33 Massachusetts natives have died in Iraq or Afghanistan.
