Why is the DSM getting more attention now
what was the turning point.

Was it the Conyers hearing?

Was it Kerry even hinting that he was going to address it, causing the Repubs to over-react?

Was it the Blair visit to the US?

Was it us?

Is there a lull in the fake news ala Michael and the runaway bride?

If you agree with me that the DSM is now getting more mainstream attention, what turned the tide?

1. It was Mark Felt????
Journalists longing for the good old days when they were the "government watchdogs" they taught us to be in journalism school. Revisiting Watergate put us all in the frame of mind to think about patriotism as it relates to dissent and exposure of government wrongdoings....

2. The people over in corporate...
I think of BushCo's three main bases - neocon, theocratic right, and corporate - corporate (except for oil) is just getting too freaked out by the actions of the neocons and radical right. Corporate acts purely on what's going to drive profits, and they understand that the foolish Bushco policies that are whacking up and creeping out the globe will begin to dampen profits soon.

7. So the coalition is breaking up?
I wonder if the Schiavo case hacked off some of the most fervent of the pro-life folk. And the filibuster issue as well. I wonder if the Religious Right is still happy with Bush, or if they're getting pissed at not getting results.

10. Shiavo could have been the straw...
I don't know too many fundies, but the conservative (mostly ex) Bush supporters I know have had it with the religious right. They're as scared as I am.

I think corporate is kicking itself about Gore. I think they've been fighting internally with the neocons for a while. I also think we're seeing some corporate candidates distancing themselves from Bush as the people at headquarters are deciding who to promote.

3. The real turning point was when
George Galloway endeared himself to the Senate Subcommittee on the Food for Oil fiasco. Nothing the criminals did seem to make any difference till then. Since then their world is starting to crumble faster and faster. George Galloway has done more for us than most people realize.

5. Despite the "happy talk" Iraq is not getting better
"You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time."
Abraham Lincoln

Iraq is not going well. Americans are still dying over there and the amount of money being spent on Iraq is producing nothing.

The President has promised reforms on Social Security that Americans don't want. The job picture is dismal. The Admin has fudged the numbers on this but the people know that good jobs are scarce and getting scarcer.

The Government is putting out phoney news reports and news stations are making it look they they are real news reports. You can't trust these people to tell you the straight story.

The Rethuglicans in Congress ran in 1994 on reducing government involvement in the lives of ordinary people. Except, as in the case of Terry Schiavo, when they think they should overrule the wishes of the people. Ordinary Americans do not want Bill Frist or Tom Delay deciding what final wishes should be carried out and which should be overridden by Act of Congress. These people are not God, but they sure act like they have God's written permission to rule the nation.

Compassionate conservative really is an oxymoron. United Airlines defaulted on their pension plan. Other worried airlines with troubled pension plans called the White House and asked if they too should file for bankruptcy in order to get rid of pension fund obligations. The White House indicated that they didn't care.

Things fall apart, the center cannot hold.

6. So Bush is crashing and burning
and people are starting to separate "Why do you hate America" from their dislike of what Bush is doing? I think that's an important point.

Is Bush finally getting separated from our feelings about 9/11?

9. Rethugs can't govern.
Rethugs simply cannot use the mechanisms of government to bring about positive change in the lives of the people they have been elected to govern. They are completely incompetent at this. They screwed up the response to 9/11. They can't find ways to get the job numbers up. They can't get legislation passed that does anything for anyone but the wealthy. Their total legislative agenda has been, cut taxes and defund those who help the lower and middle income people to fight against their own economic oppression. Rethugs cannot govern.

What they do very, very well is lie. But, as Lincoln said, a lie has a shelf-life of limited time. In that space of time, the Rethugs have to produce something that has actually helped the majority of the people who voted for them. They have not done this. (Cuz they are incompetent at governing. They suck at it.) They try to force everything through by brute force in Congress. It is not working. It was doomed from the start. 9/11 artificially gave the REthugs a veneer of invincibility. They are very good at sliming opponents in elections. But they can't come across with the goods for the voters. And the voters will not be fooled 'all of the time.' And now the Rethugs are out of ideas and have to face what they have done and failed to do. (Did I mention that they can't govern?)

11. Their whole concept seems to be
that damn trickle down theory. One guy I know seems to think if the Repubs could have about 20 or 30 years, we'd really see how their policies would work. I think they figure that people will just start naturally pulling themselves up by their boot straps or something.

12. Because it is so obviously true. And although the media did
everything possible to squelch the piece, it's innate power is beginning to prevail. It may yet resonate much more than it already has. Here is what needs to happen. Bush's ratings need to sink to about 30%. That would frighten many Pubs who would begin to distance themselves. Then, if the media senses that the tide is turning, they could "turn on a dime". If that happened, it would be all over for the Bush gang.

Is this going to happen? Not too likely. But, possible. If it did, the turn around would act has the greatest piece of therapy ever experienced by the human race. Millions of people all over the world would start returning to normal mentally after years of terrible anguish over the political situation in the U.S.; The world would see that the Democratic process really does work in the U.S. We would be to regain the position of premier champion for freedom.

13. A reporter finally had the balls to ask Bush and Blair about it.
I think that because of all the on-line chatter and the fact that bloggers, such as myself, weren't going to let this go away and were going to keep screaming about it until somebody in the press picked up on it.

I think the real turning point was when a reporter asked both Bush and Blair about it when they held a joint press conference. I'm sure that reporter found out about it via the Internet and not on any wire service.

All the other news crews were there and they couldn't just turn off their cameras, so now they have to report it as well. And they are also having to answer questions as to why they let it go so long without ever reporting on it.

They're still trying their best to ignore the story though. I haven't seen anything on the MSM about Conyers delivering the petition, but I do see allot of coverage of the missing girl in Aruba.

I'm sure that if the DSM story starts to get any real attention, Rove will throw some baby down a well and call FOX to cover the story.

16. Re: "That reporter was staged - as you noticed Blair taking the mike"

Re: What do you live under a rock??

What's with the insult.

I've been aware of the DSM since it broke in the Sunday Times, and have been following its' progression (or lack of) in the media ever since.

And why wouldn't Blair take the mic? It was a British document after all, so it would only seam natural that he would be the first to jump on the defensive.

truthout and rawstory are great sites, but I wouldn't give them all the credit. Buzzflash has been harping on this as well. Places like DU, Kos, and others, which are user driven, have been instrumental in getting info to the people as well as Bloggers who maintain their own blogs separate from the user based forums. Oh, and let's not forget CraigsList.

So no, I don't live under a rock.
But if you're going to jump in and start insulting people like that, then please go crawl back under yours.
