Orlando Sentinel letter displays ignorance - here's my response (coments?)

This showed up in today's Sentinel, so I thought I'd respond - please comment before I send...

What's left out

Regarding the June 14 article, "U.S. Senate apologizes for not acting on lynching": Isn't it funny that of the major supposed mainstream media that I have read the past couple of days, none of them in their stories has acknowledged that it was Southern Democrats who blocked the lynching bills?

Sometimes it is not what the media tell you that is the problem. Sometimes it is what they don't tell you that speaks volumes about their liberal bias.

In response to a recent LTTE by Karl Weinberg, "What's left out" (6/20/05), I couldn't agree more. However, Mr Weinberg needs to continue with his thought. The Southern Democrats who blocked the anti-lynching laws became the heart and soul of the Republican party in the south. Strom Thurmond was the poster child, but he was not alone. Others included Jesse Helms, Trent Lott, Phil Gramm, Dick Armey, and Billy Tauzin.

But to take this thought one step further, it was Bill Frist, a southern Republican, who prevented a roll call vote, instead forcing a voice vote so that no senator would be on the record in opposition to the apology. However, senators could still sign on to the apology as co-sponsors. To date, 13 senators have have not signed - all Republicans, and six from the South (Alexander - TN, Cochran - MS, Cornyn - TX, Hutchison - TX, Lott - TX, and Shelby - AL). Mr Weinberg is correct - sometimes it is what they don't tell you that speaks about their bias.

Good response! I find liberals/Dems don't write LTTEs nearly as much as Repukes do (at least not in my area) so good for you for writing in! We need to employ whatever outlet we can.

While six are from the South (Alexander - TN, Cochran - MS, Cornyn - TX, Hutchison - TX, Lott - TX, and Shelby - AL), others come from such far-flung states as Utah, Wyoming, and (Sununu's state -- New Hampshire?). Clearly, this is a Republican phenomenon, not a regional one.
